A Master Class in Innovative Methods in Health and Social Science
Research“Patient-centred Professionalism”
nd
Tuesday 22 March 2011, 10am-3.30pm (registration from 9.30am)
Sketty Hall, Sketty Lane, Swansea
What does ‘patient-centred professionalism’ mean and to whom? Do health professionals understand the
term and is this evidenced in their daily working lives, their use of workspace, their relationships with
others and their sense of self? How does a patient-centred professional approach affect their work with
patients and is this of any benefit to patients or others?
A team of researchers at Swansea University (College of Medicine, College of Science and College of
Human and Health Sciences) have been examining the nature and impact of ‘patient-centred
professionalism’ across community care settings, working with those in general practice, community
pharmacy and community nursing to elicit a wide-range of views and experiences from health professionals
and patients. The Master Class will bring this work together, through its emphasis on presenting aspects of
these studies in relation to novel applications of mixed-method approaches for data capture including biophotographic methods, consensus building activities, and Nominal Group Work.
During the Master Class, participants will be encouraged to share their views on innovative method use and
their own experiences of working in a patient-centred professional manner or being at the receiving end of
care, and participation is welcomed from a wide-ranging disciplinary audience of: health professionals,
researchers, academics and students. Participants will work closely with members of the research team to
discuss methods and their applications, and the effect of patient-centred professionalism on practice and
personal and professional values through both didactic teaching and interactive work.
The whole-day event should be of interest to all parties, irrespective of research experience or knowledge
of patient-centred professionalism.

As part of INSRV's continued series of improvements, in close consultation with the Schools and
Directorates, a proposal was discussed, and agreed to change the backup retention period for networked
file store (Home and Shared) and email from one year to three months.
What does this mean for my School/Directorate? Any file that is deleted or corrupted within the
past 3 months, and has been stored for more than one day, will normally be recoverable. Any that fall
outside of the 3-month period will no longer be available for recovery.
Why is this change necessary? The required significant increase in networked file store, to be
implemented during Summer 2011, would dramatically increase the costs of backup. In order to constrain
these costs within the agreed budgets, whilst progressing with the increase in networked file store, we
need to adjust our backup retention period accordingly.
When is this change being implemented? In order to prepare for the increase in networked file store,
we wish to implement this well in advance, with a proposed date of Monday 7th February 2011.
Unavailability of ORCA - Monday 24th January, 08:00 - 08:30
What is being done? Upgrade to ORCA (orca.cf.ac.uk)
