Service Learning Project Mission Zero Waste In an effort to reduce – and ultimately eliminate – waste from a school, implementation of the following practices and programs is suggested: Paper – all paper generated by the office and in the classrooms, including white, colored, magazines, catalogs, newspapers and cereal box type cardboard, can be recycled at Guahan Waste Control/Mr. Rubbishman as mixed paper. Corrugated Cardboard – If you plan to recycle cardboard it should be broken down (flattened) to ensure maximum use of the bins provided for the cardboard. There should be no contamination of the cardboard, which includes food, Styrofoam or anything else that is not corrugated cardboard. Cardboard can be taken to Guahan Waste Control/Mr. Rubbishman. Aluminum Cans – Most schools are participants in the i*recycle program and have an 8cy bin for aluminum cans only. The collection bins must contain aluminum cans only. Other types of cans including steel or bimetal cans (like Mr. Brown and food cans), aluminum cooking trays, Vienna Sausage cans, Spam cans and foil, which can be recycled as aluminum at Pyramid Recycling but cannot be recycled by the i*recycle program. Steel or Bimetal Cans – Mr. Brown, food cans and other types of non-aluminum cans can be separated out and recycled at Pyramid Recycling as scrap metal. Plastics 1 and 2 – These are the only plastics that can be recycled on Guam at Pyramid Recycling. On the bottom of the plastic container look for the triangular recycling logo. If the number within the logo is 1 or 2, it can be recycled. The codes are based on the type of resin the plastic is made from, and the type of resin is indicated beneath the triangle. Number 1 plastic is called PET or PETE, and that refers to polyethylene terephthalate, which is the type of resin used for bottles of water, tea, soda, milk, etc. Number 2 plastic is HDPE, high density polyethylene, and these are generally gallon jugs of water, milk or juice, as well as large containers of bleach, vinegar, soy sauce, and various cleaning materials. So all plastic beverage containers should be separated out and recycled at Pyramid Recycling as well as #2 plastic cleaning supplies used on the premises. Marine Mania will only accept from home/off campus aluminum cans and recycle them from the school. All other from home/off campus recyclable materials (paper, cardboard, nonaluminum cans and plastics #1 and #2 must be recycled through the listed recycle agencies.
