THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP Part1

1.

“Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My ________.” Lk14:25-26

2. “And whoever does not ____ his cross and come after Me cannot be my disciple.” Lk14:27

The hate He refers to is comparative: natural love to love of and for Christ. Enough to bear His cross, identify with Him in suffering and reproach. When we take up the cross, we are saying “Yes” to Him and

“No” to the world.

3. “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a _____.” Matt10:34

4. “For I have come to ’set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’ and a man’s enemies will be those of his own _________.” Matt10:35-36

5. “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not

______ of me.” Matt10:37

6. “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.” Matt10:38-39

7. “For which of you, _________ to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish?” Lk14:28-30

8. “Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and ________ whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.”

Lk14:31-32

9. “So likewise, whoever of you does not _______ all that he has cannot be My disciple. Lk14:33

These scriptures reveal that following Christ is a costly process, so far as our earthly desires are concerned. Many have weighed earthly pleasures, versus requirements so clearly set down by Jesus

Christ for His disciples and have considered the price of following Him Too High.

In this text Jesus laid down four (4) conditions for discipleship.

A. There is a Cross to be Borne . Many partly believed

Jesus to be the Messiah. If He was, they wouldn’t miss out on blessings. If not, they hadn’t invested too much.

10. “Then a certain scribe came and said to Him,

“Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” And

Jesus said to him, “_____ have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay

His head.” Matt8:19-20

11. “Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my ______.” But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.” Matt8:21-22

12. “And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” “But Jesus said to him, “No one having put his hand to the ____, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Lk9:61-62

13. “Then Jesus said to His disciples, If anyone desires

to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Matt 16:24

Doctrine of the Cross:

14. Preached- “For Christ did not send me to _______, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of word, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. 1Corth

1:17

15. Gloried- “But God forbid that I should _____ except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

Gal6:14

16. Reconciliation through- “ But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of __________, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.”

Eph2:13-16

17. Enemies of- “For many walk, of whom I have told

you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their _____-who set their mind on earthly things.”

Phil3:18-19

18. Peace made by- “For it pleased the Father that in

Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the _____ of His cross”

Col:19-20

Historically, the coming of Christ provoked opposition. “The Sword” was wholly in the hands of the enemies of Jesus’ Kingdom

Socially, the coming of Christ stirred up discord; the picture of the sword cutting into the home, separating child and parent or siblings. Jesus is not asking us to cut ties with families, unless, it is a choice of Him or

Family.

There are a number of religions still today which will excommunicate, treat as dead and even kill, if the child leaves that faith for Christianity.

Spiritually, Presence of Christ brings a sword.

19. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a _________ of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb4:12

The Gospel of Peace 1 st brings warfare into the soul, cuts old habits, opposes sin, and sets up a new standard in opposition to our past. The Old Adam will not die without struggle.

Many people would like to follow Christ on their own terms. Many stores feature for sale a small gold cross with a sign that reads. “Get it on easy terms“, Not so the Kingdom of Christ.
