Morning Work—Each morning students will complete math and language morning work. We will
go over it daily in ELA or Math class. On Fridays, students will take a math and language quiz
based on the exact skills focused on in their morning work that week. Morning work is such an
essential part of our curriculum as it reviews so many skills at one time. It is very important
that students pay attention as we go over this each day!
Word Work/Spelling– We will have a word work test every Friday. We will be studying words
that have the same or similar spelling patterns. The students will categorize, sort and use the
words during the week. The students will also have their own list of third grade words. More
details on how these tests will be graded will be forthcoming.
Math– At the end of each math unit (about once a month), we will have a unit test. We will also
have daily grades throughout the unit to assess students understanding of the material covered
so far. Grades will be weighted according to the following % to obtain the overall math grade:
math morning work quiz 20%, daily grades 30%, and unit tests 50%.
Writing– We will grade our published writings using rubrics. Students will be taught the Write
from the Beginning program of writing in combination with using mentor texts.
Reading– Students will take a test at the end of most novel studies or big books that we have
read together as a class. Sometimes students will take independent reading tests on passages
we have not read together to see how they are reading independently.
Science/Social Studies—Students will take a vocabulary quiz every Friday on the words they
have been studying all week. These are usually fill in the blank and short answer quizzes.
*Spelling/Word Work, Writing, and Reading grades are combined to equal a Language Arts
grade. Often rubrics are used to grade various projects in Science and Social Studies.
Students are aware of which projects will be graded and what is expected of them each time.
We will send home a homework sheet with spelling and vocabulary words to study at the
beginning of each week. Students will have a spelling, vocabulary, and math/language
morning work quiz on every Friday.
As you have read, there are many important activities going on in the morning! Students that
are tardy often miss writing down homework assignments as well as going over essential morning
work skills. Please make every effort to have your child here on time! At 7:40 we begin our day!
Hopefully this newsletter has not caused you a giant headache or added to your stress! We will
make it through this year together! Third grade is tough, but it is also a lot of fun. I have
found that many parents often have the same homework and grading questions at the beginning
of the year so I wanted to try to ease your minds about the routines of this new third grade
adventure by informing you up front.
Remember, we are in this TOGETHER! Please contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or
suggestions.
