Spiritual Weaponry: Components of the Armor of God (Part 4) (Isaiah 59:17-19; Eph 6:10-18) 17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke. 18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence. 19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him. Isaiah 59:17-19 (KJV) Breaking down the Armor of God (Briser l'armure de Dieu) What Isaiah declared as “Garments of vengeance” Paul breaks down as components… 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Put on the belt of Truth (Enfilez la ceinture de la vérité) 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6 (KJV) Jesus walked in truth, lived truth, displayed truth, and is truth. To be “in Christ” is to be in the realm or the way of truth. The CBL commentary says…We stand in the realm of truth. The person who operates in the realm of the truth of God's Word will not be defeated in battle. Page 1 of 8 Truth has force. It can dispel rumor, counter lies, and provide strength to stand when under attack or assault. Jesus, who declared “I am the way, the truth, and the life…” stood before a disbelieving and cynical Pilate as truth, and declared, “Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice” (John 18:37). He is truth incarnate, and as such, stood with force in the face of demonic assault. Truth has force. Truth has the ability to discern the lies of the enemy and the deceptions of people. Truth gives the ability to stand against the wiles of the enemy, recognizing “mistruth” when it is launched against us. --“God has forsaken you”, is countered by… “He has promised never to leave me nor forsake me” (Heb 13:5) --“God is against you”, is countered by… “If God before us, who can be against us?” (Ro 8:31) --“God is done with you”, is countered by… “We are children of God now and always by faith” (Gal 3:26) Truth provides sure footing, solid reputation, and integrity of reputation, and purity of soul. Those who operate in truth have the assurance of operating in godly knowledge and kingdom authority. “Thy Word is Truth” (John 17:17), and as such it will guide your heart, direct your path and secure your destiny in God; a destiny that no demonic scheme can disrupt: 4 That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel. 1 Kings 2:4 (KJV) Page 2 of 8 This is a promise made to King David by God, and it reveals how God honors those who operate in truth with all their heart and all their soul. Abiding and operating in truth enables one to perpetually occupy the seat of authority and operate IN authority. Since Jesus is truth, to wear the belt of truth is to carry Jesus (His standards, his righteousness, his power, his authority) into any and every situation. How many of you know if you are the one occupying the seat of authority, and operating in and with authority, no weapon formed against you can prosper? For whatever the enemy would have designed against you is disallowed by your authority. Truth rises up within you to help you recognize and to give strength to stand opposed to all demonic lies, schemes and attacks. That is exactly what Jesus did to the devil during the wilderness temptation, it is exactly what God told David to tell his kids to do, and it is exactly what Paul is telling the church to do: Walk in truth. Put on the belt of truth and allow its godly authority to operate in you. Wear the Shoes that carry the Gospel (Porter les chaussures qui portent l'Evangile) 15 and as your shoes the readiness to announce the Good News of peace. Eph 6:15 (TEV) There is no greater victory than to deliver a soul from the fires of hell. As we heard last week, we are ambassadors for Christ, and carry the good news of the gospel wherever we go. 20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. Page 3 of 8 2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV) 7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! Isaiah 52:7 (KJV) The armor of God has as its purpose setting God’s order in place. That is exactly what occurred in Isaiah 59:16 (16 He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no one to intercede; then his own arm brought him salvation, and his righteousness upheld him. Isaiah 59:16 ESV), and it is exactly what God designed to see accomplished through us wearing the armor of God. Nothing would bring about God’s will on earth, nothing would bring about “setting God’s order in place,” more quickly than the world being set on fire with the love of Jesus Christ. You want to disrupt the schemes of the enemy? You want to deliver people from demonic grip? There is one way: Put on the shoes of your armor and carry the good news that Jesus saves! When God put on His “garments of vengeance”, deliverance was brought to the lands, and the people were returned to the way of God. And as was revealed in Revelation 19, there is a final day of correction coming soon. In the meantime it becomes our responsibility to put on the gospel shoes, and proclaim the message loud and strong that Jesus is coming again, and that He is coming soon! Are you ready to put your shoes on? It is one of the methods or ways God uses to show fury to his enemies, recompense to his enemies, establishing fear of the name of the Lord, and stopping the overwhelming attack of the enemy! This is the message pure and true: Page 4 of 8 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12 (KJV) Only believers have that message, so put on your shoes and let the angels throw a party! 10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. Carry The Shield of Faith Luke 15:10 (KJV) (Le bouclier de la foi) This part of the armor is designed to shield the believer from the fiery demonic assault. Because believers experience a multitude of temptations, most think the devil attacks in a variety of ways. While it may feel that he’s coming at you in more ways than you can count, he really only attacks through three key areas: 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1 John 2:16 (KJV) It was these three categories Satan attempted to defeat Jesus with (Luke 4:1-13)… Turn these stones to bread, you’re hungry (Lust of the flesh) All this power I will give thee (Lust of the eyes) If you are God, cast yourself down for his angels will catch you (The pride of life) It is these same three categories that Satan seeks to tempt you with as well. In fact, all sin, and all temptation, can be broken down into one of these three categories: The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. The scripture identifies Satan as the tempter… Page 5 of 8 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. Matthew 4:3 (KJV) If Satan is the tempter, that means when you face the battle of lust or pride, you are battling a demonic spirit, or a demonically inspired or controlled moment (or possibly an extended period of time). Some battles go on for a period of weeks and months. It's not just a one-time event. When you are facing such a moment, the devil is trying to steal from you everything you own— just as he was trying to do to Jesus. He is trying to take from you every gain you've ever made spiritually, and he is trying to take everything from you that you've ever gained in the natural. Remember, blessings come from the Lord (Deut. 28), and if Satan can steal from you, He is successfully stealing from God, because all that you have and all that you are belongs to God. We need to always be on guard, for the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). Satan would love to steal not only your spiritual life, but your natural life and blessings. He’ll not only steal your “present”, he’ll rob you of your “future”. The good news is God is given us the tools to recognize the attack of the enemy, and he has equipped us to defend ourselves against such attacks, and to fight back. To win! Notice how Jesus defeated him: Jesus deflected the mistruth with the shield of faith. Truth enabled Jesus to recognize the lie; faith enabled him to stand without succumbing to the force of Satan’s blow. Faith (the shield of faith) has force of power just like the other components of the armor (such as truth). Faith has the ability to deflect all satanic attack (every fiery dart). Faith shields the believer from demonic lie and temptation. Page 6 of 8 In each case Jesus deflected Satan’s temptations with Faith in the Father’s ability to supernaturally supply His need, sustain His life, and exalt Him in due season. He didn’t need the devil’s wares! Faith diffuses the fiery, untrue, demonic flaming arrows thrust at your being. Faith puts out the fire and stands upon the solid ground of the truth of God’s word. Faith is unwavering in its dedication, firm in its expectation, and powerful in its application. Swing The Sword of the Spirit (L'épée de l'esprit) Having activated faith, Jesus next countered those demonic lies with the Sword of the Spirit (The Word of God—Eph 6:17)… What Jesus Said… What we might say… It is written, man shall not live by bread (Deut 8:3)… God will supply my need (Phil 4:19) It is written, I will worship God solely (Deut 6:13)… There is but one God (Deut 6:1-4) It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God (Deut 6:16)… I walk by faith and not by sight, so I refuse to put God to some foolish test (2 Cor 5:7, Ps 37:5, Ro 8:28) Notice also the use of the sword of the Spirit by Jesus. He deflected the attack of the enemy with the shield of faith, but then attacked with the Sword. When Jesus said, “It is written…” He was actively swinging His sword. The effective quoting of the Word of God is the way to resist the devil and cause him to flee. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 (KJV) Page 7 of 8 This is why you need to read, and study and memorize the Word of God. You won’t always have your Bible handy. Your phone app (YouVersion) might not always be available. Read the Word, underline passages, study what you underline, and memorize all you can. Have it at your disposal in your mind and you will always stand ready to swing your sword, just like Jesus did. To swing the Sword you must know how to use the Sword. The swordsman is familiar with his grip, the leather on the handle, the sheath from which the sword is drawn. He is expert in his mode of attack with his sword. He knows the proper stance, the appropriate way to move, the way to avoid being hit, how to deflect attack with his sword, and how to attack himself. In a spiritual sense, all of that comes through study, memorization, and proper application of the knowledge of the Word of God. I’m convinced Jesus wore the armor that day as he withstood Satan’s temptation. You can see the helmet of salvation on him, you can see his breastplate of righteousness being properly worn, you can see the garments of vengeance / components being properly worn and used. This armor is part of your spiritual weaponry, and if you will but put it on, you will reap the same results as God and Jesus did: Fury to your adversaries, recompense to the enemies of God, the establishing of the fear of the Lord, and power to stop the overwhelming attack of the enemy. These are the weapons of our warfare. When properly used, they will accomplish in you the same thing they accomplished for God; and the same thing they accomplished through Christ. Page 8 of 8
