Statement of Purpose, General
Please state your research and study plans for the next academic year, including any
courses you plan to take or dissertation ideas you intend to develop. The statement of
purpose should not exceed two, double-spaced pages.
Statement of Purpose, Macdonald/Long Fellowship or Summer Research Internship
If you are applying for the Macdonald/Long Fellowship or Summer Research Internship,
you must attach a separate, one-page statement describing your research project and plan
for using the fellowship (this is in addition to the “Statement of Purpose, General”).
Curriculum Vitae
You must attach a copy of your vita showing your educational background, research
experience, professional papers you have published, conference participation, fellowships
or awards, etc.
Financial Aid Recommendation Forms
Two recommendation forms are required unless you are applying for a fellowship or
research internship, in which case three recommendations forms are required. PhD
candidates must have a current form from their dissertation supervisor. Applicants with
job placement files may use recommendation letters from their placement files, but they
must specifically request which letter(s) can be made available to the committee

exam (given through the Measurement and Evaluation Center) or letter from a UT faculty in one of the language departments
certifying that the student has reached the required skill level. Students whose native language is not English, and whose
dissertation requires the use of their native language, can petition the Graduate Adviser for satisfaction of this requirement. A
letter certifying proficiency is still required.
