Because of these changes, E.A. Conway Medical Center and Huey P. Long Medical Center gained access to all electronic resources of LSUHSC-S. The Library was required to notify each vendor of this change. Some vendors considered this a multi-site institution and increased subscription costs. Library Director Marianne Comegys negotiated with these vendors and was able to convince many to continue charging the Library the single-site price. E.A. Conway Medical Center and Huey P. Long Medical Center were asked to reimburse the Library for any extra charges due to their addition. Conway paid $34,973.40 and Long paid $29,051.30 for access to resources valued at over a million dollars. The Library’s 2010/2011 budget was supplemented by the following donations: Memorial Gifts Total: $290.00 Sponsorships Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology For UpToDate $3,000.00 Department of Pediatrics For UpToDate $3,000.00 Department of Family Medicine For UpToDate $3,000.00 1 Louisiana Rural Health Information Exchange For Dynamed $66,000.00 Physician Assistant Program, School of Allied Health Professions For Journal of the American Academy of Physician Assistants $75.00 Department of Anesthesiology For Anesthesiology e-books $19,331.00 Sponsorships Total $94,406.00 The Library continues to cooperate with other libraries to negotiate advantageous deals for library purchases. For example, approximately 60% of the Library’s electronic journals are purchased through consortial arrangements. The Library’s partners in these purchases include LOUIS: a statewide consortium of academic libraries LSU Health Sciences Center-New Orleans Lyrasis: an organization of more than 1700 member libraries which offers savings opportunities through group purchases, as well as other services NERL: Northeast Research Libraries Consortium, a library organization based at Yale University which allows affiliate members outside of the Northeast area to participate in cooperative purchases Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Orleans: University of Oklahoma Health Science Center Library negotiates a StatRef license on behalf of several libraries in the region SCAMeL: South Central Academic Medical Libraries The table below lists the Library’s consortial expenses for 2010/2011: TITLE LOUIS member fee StatRef Nature Ovid ISI Web of Science ExamMaster CSH Protocols Faculty of 1000 Lippincott Liebert BMJ PsychiatryOnline NEJM online ScienceDirect AMA backfiles maintenance fee Informa journals Springer Images JAMA & Archives CONSORTIA LOUIS OK,AR,NO,EAC SCAMeL New Orleans LOUIS SCAMeL SCAMeL SCAMeL New Orleans SCAMeL SCAMeL SCAMeL New Orleans New Orleans New Orleans NERL SCAMeL New Orleans PRICE $12,677.00 $7,260.07 $96,953.00 $5,832.50 $29,781.00 $2,800.00 $2,012.00 $2,580.00 $35,750.00 $6,188.05 $17,784.00 $6,368.80 $2,150.00 $371,692.75 $197.50 $30,108.86 $3,081.00 $6,800.00 2 Springer journals AccessMedicine AccessEmergency Medicine AccessSurgery Lyrasis New Orleans New Orleans New Orleans $137,776.42 $10,551.42 $4,412.73 $4,412.73 $797,169.83 Endowments The Library has several endowment funds. The Marianne and Stafford Comegys Professorship in Medical Library Science offers library faculty and staff continuing education that would not otherwise be available. In August 2011, funds from this endowment were used to provide a class for library staff in the Mac lab at Louisiana State University in Shreveport. The instructor taught a four-hour course on the basics of using Mac computers. This will enable library staff to better assist students who have Mac computers. Other endowments include the Marianne and Stafford Comegys Endowment Fund and the James Carson (Jim) McDonald Memorial Endowment Fund, as well as the John C. McDonald Archive Fund. THE LIBRARY COLLECTION Journal Holdings Statistics, October 2011: Current electronic journals: 4175 Current print journals: 11 Total current journals: 4186 Other electronic resources, October 2011: E-books: 1061 Databases: 151 Journal changes for 2011: Librarians monitored usage statistics for each journal. Based on these reports, low-use journals were cancelled for 2011, for a savings of over $30,000. Librarians were also able to examine statistics on “turnaways,” journals to which the Library did not subscribe that LSUHSC-S users had tried unsuccessfully to access. The journals with the highest turnaway statistics were added for the 2011 subscription year. Also added were journals specifically requested by library users and journals added to subscription packages. The journals added for 2011 include: BioFactors Brain Connectivity Clinical Anatomy Disease Models & Mechanisms Journal of Adolescent & Young Adult Oncology Journal of Caffeine Research Journal of Cellular & Molecular Medicine Journal of Graduate Medical Education Journal for Healthcare Quality Molecular & Cellular Proteomics Organic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters 3 Pathology (Royal College of Pathologists Australasia) Physical & Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics Therapeutic Hypothermia & Temperature Management In addition, the Library converted its MD Consult subscription from five concurrent users to a site license, thus permitting an unlimited number of users as well as enabling mobile access. THE LIBRARY’S PHYSICAL FACILITY The Library has continued its successful program of creating exhibits and hosting traveling exhibits. In March of 2010 in honor of Women’s History Month, the Library hosted “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians,” a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine. Library staff created an accompanying exhibit to highlight the women physicians on this campus. In May 2010, Dr. Donald Wilson, former Dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the nation’s first African-American dean of an accredited non-minority medical school, visited the campus to speak on healthcare disparity in America. In conjunction with this event, the Library created a display on “Diversity in Medicine,” recognizing the accomplishments of various African-Americans in the field of medicine. In the summer of 2010, the Library displayed the photographic art of Montie’ Dobbins, Head of Access Services. Selected photographs from her collection are also periodically displayed as the “Photograph of the Day” on the institution’s website. "Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine" was displayed in the Library in August and September of 2011. This exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine with research assistance from the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. The exhibit focused on free and enslaved African Americans who served as nurses, surgeons, and hospital workers during the Civil War. Historical images and Civil War era documents revealed how these individuals provided medical care to soldiers and civilians while participating in the fight for freedom. Windows to our Past is a current exhibit that was created by two library faculty members, Dee Jones and Deidra Woodson. It documents the history of the LSU Health Sciences Center- Shreveport with photographs, newspaper clippings, publications, correspondence, artifacts and other primary source materials selected from the LSUHSC-S Archives. Beginning in 1876 with the first Shreveport Charity Hospital in downtown Shreveport, ours is a long and varied story. The exhibit highlights the various hospital and medical center locations, details the 25-year long fight to locate a medical school in Shreveport, and celebrates our founders. A special feature of the exhibit is five wooden windows, salvaged when the 1904 era Shreveport Charity Hospital was demolished in 1954. The Library continues weeding the print collection which results in removal of shelving on the first floor. This opens more space for study tables near the windows on the east side of the Library, creating a popular study area. More lights and outlets have been added to study carrels for the convenience of students. Dr. Chesson provided funds to build a backup system for the public announcement system in the circulation area so that announcements can be made during power outages. We use this system to make 4 announcements, including safety announcements, to all floors of the Library. Examples are when fire alarms sound, when severe weather alerts are issued, and when electrical outages occur. Dr. Chesson also generously provided funds to replace an outdated security and patron counting system. The new 3M system will be installed in the next month. In response to requests, the Library added a study room especially for residents on the first floor of the Library. THE LIBRARY WEBSITE The Library recently launched a state-of-the-art virtual tour to promote its services. Members of the team that created the video tour include librarians Kim Pullen, Deidra Woodson, and Talicia Tarver; Donna Haas from Medical Communications; and Lisa Higginbotham and Elizabeth Young in Video Services & TeleHealth. Medical students assisted by volunteering to "star" in the tour with members of the Library faculty and staff. The link to the tour is currently available on YouTube and is also available on the Library’s main web page. Additional new website features are the Library’s e-newsletter, a new history link (“This Month in Our History”), and a link to a slideshow highlighting library patrons accessing our resources. There is also a new link to the mobile device pages that provide information on resources available for various mobile devices. TEACHING AND OUTREACH In academic year 2010/2011, the Library taught 447 sessions to 3,401 faculty, staff and students. The Library also provided 42 outreach sessions to 1,002 attendees. The appendix contains detailed lists of classes and outreach events, as well as a summary chart for instructional and outreach sessions. The Library faculty and Library Consult returned to the School of Allied Health Professions for the 20112012 academic year starting with the fall semester. Visits are scheduled twice each month, on Tuesdays from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. The new location for the Library Consult is Room 1-132, the Student Computer Lab in the School of Allied Health Professions building. The Library faculty are there to assist not only students but faculty and staff with accessing online resources, searching the literature, writing papers and grants, and setting up classes. This service will be expanding to the Mollie Webb Speech and Hearing Center. The Library is currently partnering with the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center (FWCC) to host outreach activities with cooperation from the Shreve Memorial Public Library. These outreach activities are funded through a subcontract provided by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region. The Library’s most recent subcontract highlights consumer health information. LSU Health Shreveport Medical Library faculty members, Donna Timm and Talicia Tarver, and FWCC Clinical Research Coordinator, Lori Panu, have teamed up to meet at several branches of the Shreve Memorial Library and promote awareness of consumer health resources. On selected “Wellness Wednesdays,” medical librarians present a booth at the Broadmoor Branch of Shreve Memorial Library showcasing healthelinks, the LSU Health Shreveport Medical Library’s consumer health information website. Lori Panu provides information on clinical trials conducted at FWCC. The August 17, 2011, session was covered by KTAL, Channel 6 News. 5 Another outreach activity is a series of interactive, health-related story hours that have been presented by library faculty at public libraries in Shreveport. These popular events focus on wellness for children. The Library’s outreach activities are funded primarily through extramural sources. I got great feedback on my paper for submission to a journal, and they even compared it against the journal requirements. This service is better than any I’ve heard about at other institutions. Thanks! I really appreciate having this service available and they were very quick. I have already recommended this service and others were just as satisfied. Please keep this!! LIBRARY ASSESSMENT On the AAMC 2011 Medical School Graduation Questionnaire, 100% of the senior medical students at LSU Health Shreveport indicated they were either satisfied or very satisfied with library services. Three focus groups were held with students in spring 2011. Suggestions received included offering vending machines in the Library, extending the hours the Library is open, providing tables with outlets instead of study carrels, and having more study rooms. Positive comments were received about the candy provided at the circulation desk, UpToDate, the individual assistance offered by librarians, the Library’s website and the exhibits. THE LIBRARY’S COLLABORATIONS -WITH THE CHANCELLOR’S OFFICE The Library has been asked to be part of a team that is working on a video presentation. This video will look at the history of the property on which LSU Health Sciences Center is built and outline proposals for the future development of the surrounding properties. 7 -WITH THE LSU HEALTH SHREVEPORT FOUNDATION Library Director, Marianne Comegys, co-chaired with Jenny Barish “An Evening for Heroes,” an inaugural event held May 5, 2011. This ceremony, sponsored by the LSU Health Shreveport Foundation, honored 120 emergency responders and medical professionals, 55 of whom were LSU Health Shreveport employees. An overflow crowd of 800 people attended the event, and two former trauma patients spoke in recognition of the efforts of doctors, nurses, physical therapists, 911 operators, police officers, firefighters, and Life Air Rescue crew members. -WITH LSUHSC-S MEDICAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION In October 2011, the Library sponsored and taught classes for CME credit on healthelinks and DynaMed at reunions for the medical school classes of 1971, 1991, and 2001. -WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERNAL MEDICINE The Library continues to partner with the Department of Internal Medicine to find evidence-based answers to the clinical questions that arise in Morning Report. Librarians attend Morning Report three days a week and residents go to the Library to search the literature with the designated librarians. Additionally, the Clinical Medical Librarian rounds regularly with an Internal Medicine team to provide evidence-based information at the point of care. -WITH COMPUTER SERVICES/PELICAN The Library is in the process of working with Lee Bairnsfather, who is Assistant Vice President for Information Technology, Office of the Vice President for Health Affairs and Medical Education for the LSU System, to investigate the possibility of a consortial purchase of several Elsevier products. Library faculty met with Dr. Bairnsfather and a consultant who is working on negotiating the purchase of these electronic resources for inclusion in the electronic health record for the ten LSU hospitals throughout the state of Louisiana. The Library worked with Alex Garcia, MyChart Team Leader, to link MedlinePlus Connect in MyChart to provide context-sensitive health information to patients. MyChart is the personal health record component of Epic’s electronic health record. A library proposal to the National Network of Libraries of Medicine was funded for the purpose of educating patients about MyChart and its features, including the linkage to MedlinePlus. The library will also be partnering with public libraries to make patients aware that the public libraries have computers available for those who do not have computer access at their homes. -WITH OTHER HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIES Recently the Medical Library took part in the Value of Library and Information Services in Patient Care Study (E11-019). Julia M. Esparza was the principal investigator for the study, in which LSUHSC-S was one of only two study sites in the five-state South Central Region (AR, LA, NM, OK, and TX). There were 56 study centers and 118 participating hospitals nationwide. From Mid-March to Mid-April, the Medical Library surveyed the clinical staff to find out how they used library and information services in patient care. Using the Critical Incident Technique, the survey respondents were asked to think about an occasion in the last six months when they looked for information resources for patient care (beyond what is available in the patient record, EMR system or lab results) and to answer questions regarding that occasion. Below are some of the results: 8 Did you handle any aspect of the clinical situation differently as a result of having the information?
