Unlike previous PEs, this PE requires the student to perform specific competencies while being evaluated by an Instructor. During the evaluation phase, coaching and instruction is NOT PERMITTED. Evaluate the student’s performance of the elements in the listed competencies to comply with acceptable standards taught in the previous PEs using generally acceptable methods and techniques. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this exercise, the student will have demonstrated the ability to: Perform competencies involving entry and exit from a simulated radiologically controlled area including: a. Use of a radiological work permit b. Use and placement of personnel dosimetry c. Observance and adherence to radiological posting Perform and document a loose surface contamination survey; Perform pre-operational checks on portable survey instrumentation; Perform and document a radiation survey; Enter, maintain access control of, and exit a LHRA with unknown radaition levels; Obtain a grab air sample, perform, and document a preliminary field analysis for airborne radioactivity; Don and remove a full set of personnel protective clothing; Remove material from a simulated contaminated area exercising proper contamination control techniques; Perform a whole body frisk; and Perform a direct frisk of material for free release. 1 RPT-243-PE-9 Practical Exercise INSTRUCTOR GUIDE RPT Competencies Equipment and Material: • Portable contamination monitoring instrument - alpha and beta-gamma; • Portable gamma survey instrument; • Portable air sampler with sample head; • Blank survey map of room 509; • Blank survey map of room A-509-D; • Air Sample Data Sheet; • Smears and envelops; • Air sample filter paper; • Plastic bags; • Duct tape; • Masking tape; • Personal protective clothing; Industrial Safety equipment; • Personnel dosimetry – TLD and EAD • Copy of RWP-201X-243 Task #9-A, 9-B & 9-C for each person. • Copy of previous survey of Room 509. Safety Considerations: All of the survey data and posting in the lab area is for training purposes only. No actual radiological hazards exist. Ensure you maintain your balance when undressing from the anti-Cs and exiting the area at the step-off pad. The radioactive sources used in this PE are below regulatory limits for control; however, they are not to be handled nor removed from the practical exercise area without permission of the instructor. Personal protective equipment used in this exercise is for training purposes. When an actual industrial safety hazard exists, the instructor will provide separate and specific safety instructions General Instructions: 1. This practical exercise should be done only after attending the RPT-243-6 lecture and completing PE-1 through 8. 2. This practical exercise is designed to be completed on an individual basis. Each student will be evaluated indepedent of other team members. 3. Three part communication and human performance improvement tools are to be exercised in this PE. 4. Read the scenario rules and the set-up below and then read any introductory material for each part of the exercise. 5. Follow the instructions as written to complete each section. 6. Document all information required by the guide’s instructions. 7. Maintain this guide intact. 2 RPT-243-PE-9 Practical Exercise INSTRUCTOR GUIDE RPT Competencies Instructor Note: The student will perform each of the three tasks listed in the Scenario Set-Up. While completing those tasks, the student will perform several competencies each with specific listed elements including “critical elements”.. If a critical element is performed with an error, the Instructor should “Pause” the scenario, correct the error, and coach the student in the proper performance. The element will receive an UNSAT and the competency will be failed. If any one of the critical elements in a competency is failed, the entire competency is failed. Even though a critical element is graded as UNSAT, the remaining elements should be performed and receive a grade. At the completion of the competency, the Instructor should review the attempt with the student and in the case of failure, arrange to conduct the evaluation again. Each competency may be attempted up to three times. If the student fails a competency a third time, the grade of the last attempt should be entered on the scoring sheet. Scenario Evaluation Rules 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. In order to derive the maximum benefit from the scenario-based training, the student must develop and implement the skill of “thinking aloud”. This allows the Instructor to know what you are thinking and enables them in assisting you as permitted by the scenario. If you do not think aloud, the Instructor will assume you are not thinking and evaluate you appropriately. The Instructor may function in several different roles during the PE. This is an evaluated practical exercise. Coaching or instruction is NOT permitted while evaluation is in progress. Unless otherwise noted, the various elements in this exercise are to be completed without error. The Instructor will evaluate the student’s performance to comply with generally acceptable methods and techniques. The student is required to repeat those competencies not performed properly. Each candidate will complete the assigned tasks performing each competency while being observed by an Instructor. Failure to complete a competency with no error in all of the “critical elements” will require that the student repeat the competency. Three attempts total are permitted for each competency. If the third attempt receives an UNSAT, a failing score for that competency will be assigned. After each competency is scored, an overall score for the PE is assigned and recorded on the scoring sheet. 3 RPT-243-PE-9 Practical Exercise INSTRUCTOR GUIDE RPT Competencies The Instructor may “push the pause button” to pause the scenario in order to stop an unsafe act. 10. Upon hearing the words “PAUSE” or “STOP” the student is to cease whatever activity they are in and await instruction. The Instructor will notify all students when the scenario is to be resumed by stating “Resume Play”. 9. Scenario Set-Up Instructor Note: More than one competency is performed in each of the listed tasks. The following minimum competencies are completed for the task shown. A. Enter into a Contaminated Area, perform a contamination survey, and remove a sample bottle from the area (B-509-E). (C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4, C-5, C-6) B. Enter into a Locked High Radiation Area with unknown radaiation levels and perform a radiation survey of a known hot spot (A-509-D). (C-1, C-5, C-7, C-8/9) C. Obtain a grab air sample at a specified location; perform a quick count of the air sample, and document the sample and the results (509). (C-1, C-5, C-6, C-10) Your potential employer, TOP-NOTCH Inc., provides Top-Notch RP Technicians to work in a variety of situations. In order to ensure that new technicians represent the quality of employees demanded by the company’s clients, TOP-NOTCH Inc. conducts a final performance evaluation of all employment candidates. The candidates are required to perform specific competencies typcial of those required to be performed by an RP Technician. The assigned tasks are: A. Enter into a Contaminated Area, perform a contamination survey, and remove a sample bottle from the area (B-509-E). B. Enter into a Locked High Radiation Area with unknown radaiation levels and perform a radiation survey of a known hot spot (A-509-D). C. Obtain a grab air sample at a specified location; perform a quick count of the air sample, and document the sample and the results (509). Specific Instructions 1. Use the RWP-201X-Task 9 appropriate for the task to be performed. 2. Each competency can be performed independent of the other sections but may be performed simultaneously. 3. The guide will provide instructions regarding the completion of the competency. The Instructor will only provide prompts permitted by the guide. Coaching is not permitted during evaluation. 4 RPT-243-PE-9 Practical Exercise INSTRUCTOR GUIDE RPT Competencies 4. Critical elements within a competency are designated with an “*”. All critical elements must be performed without error in order to pass a competency. 5. A “SAT” for a critical element means no error was observed and is equal to 4 points. An ”UNSAT” for a critical element means an error was observed and is equal to 0 points. Instructor Note: Allow the student to perform the tasks with no prompts by you beyond what you would provide as a supervisor giving out job assignments and conducting job briefings. Inform the student that you will be shadowing them in the task performance and will not be speaking unless you are role playing or calling a Pause to the scenarios for safety purposes or, in the case of failure, instructional purposes. In the case of instruction, they will have received an UNSAT and will be required to complete the competency again – up to three attempts. Remind them to think aloud. At the completion of the tasks, confirm the competencies have all been completed and complete the scoring sheet for the student. Their final score and performance should be reviewed at the conclusion of the PE. 5 RPT-243-PE-9 Practical Exercise INSTRUCTOR GUIDE RPT Competencies Competency 1 – Entry and Exit of a Radiologically Controlled Area Elements: 1. *Reviews the correct RWP and identifies the following information (include units with your responses): a.
