Over the course of the 2014-2015 School year, you have become
an accomplished reader who thinks, writes and talks deeply about text. As you enter the next part of your
educational journey, you must move forward in your reading life. Research shows that a lack of reading during
summer vacation will lead to what is called “summer reading loss” in which reading skills that you have gained
during the school year are lost.
You are required to read a minimum of 4 books this summer. Use these charts and the log on
the next page to self-assess your progress and the depth of your thinking about the texts. This packet must be
brought to school on SEPTEMBER 9, 2015, along with your supplies and copies of the books you read.

You must bring in at least one of
these books on the first day of school.
All reading and writing work is based
on these four books.
There will be a formal assessment on
these books in September.
Record your Stop & Jots and Long &
Strongs on the pages provided.
Purchase all supplies for Reading and
Writing.

1st Reading grade of the 2016 School
Year.
Scholars are expected to begin on the
first day with all of the materials listed
below. Utilize this list to purchase
supplies when stores are having Backto-School sales in the summer.
Required Reading and Writing Supplies
5 Subject spiral notebook
with Heavy Duty cover
AND pockets (Reading)
Pencil case with 12 pens
and pencils, erasers,
sharpener and glue stick or
mini stapler
5 Subject spiral notebook
with Heavy Duty cover
AND pockets (Writing)
1 box of GALLON sized ziptop bags. Bring ONE bag in
on the first day. Leave the
rest at home.
1 Plastic Folder marked
“ELA” (Reading & Writing)
1 pack of loose-leaf (to be
kept in the ELA folder)
Minimum of 48 packs of
assorted Sticky-notes (don’t
bring them all in at once!)
Markers or colored pencils
(optional: highlighters)
Constant supply of Independent reading books that are on your level and are interesting to you!
You must have 2 books with you on a DAILY basis, starting 9/9/15.
