Topics include limits and continuity, differentiation and integration of functions, parametric and polar relations, and infinite series. Applications include velocity and acceleration, optimization, related rates of change, accumulation, areas between curves, volumes of solids, and writing functions as infinite series. Students who take the Calculus BC Advanced Placement exam in May and who earn a Qualified score (3) or higher may be able to earn six semester hours of college credit (at the sole discretion of the accepting college or university). Course Objectives: As an Advance Placement course, Mr. Johnson’s objective is to prepare each student to take the AP Calculus BC exam in May and to earn a Qualified score or higher. Toward that end, extra tutorials and PISD sponsored study sessions will be offered. While not mandatory, they are highly recommended by Mr. Johnson for the success of each student on the AP Calculus BC exam. Extra credit will be given for attendance at each Prep Session. Format and Procedures: 1. Class attendance is mandatory. If you do miss a class, it is the student’s responsibility to make up the material and make sure assigned work is turned in on time. 2. The teacher and administrators will handle tardy procedures in accordance with school guidelines. 3. Each test is cumulative over the entire year. Tests in the spring semester will include problems from the fall semester. However, the spring Final Exam will cover only the spring semester. 4. Topic quizzes will generally follow the outline of the textbook. Each quiz must be passed. Failed quizzes must be retaken until passed, with the retake grade assigned as 70. A quiz must be retaken until it is passed to insure mastery of each topic. 5. Homework will be assigned at each class session. It will be due at the next class session. Homework assignments will take into account that the student has two days in which to complete the assignment, and it is recommended that the student do a portion of the assignment on each of the two days. Homework completed to the satisfaction of Mr. Johnson will be given a 100. Incomplete assignments will be returned to the student to be completed as work turned in late. Weekly homework assignments will also be given. 6. Late Work Policy: Students may turn in homework late until the end of each three-week IPR grading cycle. Homework turned in late will be given a 70 if completed to the satisfaction Mr. Johnson. If the late assignment is incomplete, Mr. Johnson will return the late assignment to the student to be finished. The assignment still must be completed by the end of the threeweek IPR cycle. 7. Extra credit will be offered to all students and will be considered extra credit for extra learning. Extra credit will not be offered at the end of a 9-week grading cycle as means of increasing a grade average. Extra credit opportunities include participation in AP Prep Sessions and enrichment activities from the textbook 8. PISD and Hendrickson rules regarding cell phones and electronic devices will be strictly enforced in the classroom, meaning Mr. Johnson will pick up cell phones and other electronic devices that are out in class and turn them in to the appropriate administrator by 4:30 PM of that day. Students may use laptop computers in class at the discretion of Mr. Johnson. 9. Conduct: a. Be on time and prepared for class to begin as the tardy bell rings. b. Be respectful to yourself and others. c. Be responsible for your actions and lessons. Course Materials: 1. A graphing calculator is required for AP Calculus BC. Mr. Johnson highly recommends each student obtain his or her own graphing calculator. Students on free or reduced lunch programs can check one out from the school. In class, Mr. Johnson uses one of the TI-84 family of calculators, which has all the higher functions and computing power needed while not being the most expensive on the market. HHS and Mr. Johnson are not responsible for the safe-keeping of personal calculators while students are at school. Academic Integrity: Each student in this course is expected to abide by the Pflugerville ISD Code of Conduct and Student Handbook with regards to Academic Integrity. Any work submitted by a student in this course for academic credit will be the student’s own work unless otherwise specifically directed by the teacher. Work submitted that is not the student’s own work will be given a zero with no opportunity for remediation.
