Sandy Dugal Wellness Profile January 31, 2013 Name: Job Title: Department: Sandy Dugal Associate Director, Reunion and Parent Giving Kalamazoo College Fund Office of College Advancement Photo: Coop and Sandy. Twenty-six years of health care employment taught me a lot about illness. With responsibilities in oncology, trauma care, perinatology, neonatology and medical rehabilitation, I developed keen disease analytic skills, but spent little time studying prevention. My six years at Kalamazoo College have taught me more about wellness. I appreciate the addition of the wellness program to our employee benefits plan. I’ve tried Tai Chi, balance workshops, walking programs, and used the faculty/staff gym. I read Ken Wood’s wellness newsletters and indulge in the ten minute chair massage program. In the last ten months I’ve lost 40 pounds while participating in K’s Weight Watchers at Work program. I enjoy the camaraderie of campus colleagues – celebrating our triumphs and supporting each other through speed bumps along the way. I’ve found success in this program, thanks to K’s support. My recent annual physical revealed the additional benefits of improved blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels. My proudest wellness accomplishment is also a shared journey. My father, Carl Cooper, was welcomed into our home and our lives after my mother died in 2010. Coop has lived with blindness most of his life. Four months after my mother’s death, he suffered a stroke. With support from rehabilitation therapists and around the clock nurturing at home, Coop continues to make gains in independence. Coop’s stroke and rehabilitation has been one of my hardest health challenges in recent years. Balancing career and caregiving can be a struggle. I have other tools in my wellness kit that make those difficult moments easier. My husband, Tony, partners with me to make Coop’s senior years satisfying. My faith, family, and friends replenish me. I unplug with prayer, reading, walking, chiropractic care, music, and hobbies. A positive attitude and humor help me balance career and home life. Working with K colleagues, alumni, and students stimulates me and provides a creative outlet. As this year unfolds, I look forward to discovering new ways towards wellness. Kalamazoo College’s wellness program offers delightful enticements, including yoga, Zumba, and lunchtime walking programs. I encourage all faculty and staff to consider the resources available through Ken Wood and the College’s wellness program. I’m confident you’ll find one perfect for your wellness journey.
