Oceans of Opportunity
Careers fair - Friday, 8th November 2013
The Oceans of Opportunity event is being held on Friday, 8th November 2013 at Newcastle University. It will be attended by an
estimated 500-600 pupils aged 15-18yrs, from schools and colleges around the NE region and further afield.
Schools can sign up to a range of stimulating, interactive activities that bring science learning to life, participate in an engaging
debate, and find out more about the fantastic careers and courses on offer. A wide range of high profile companies and employers
will be represented at the event with many challenging and exciting careers showcased.
There are a number of different options available to your school/college, as there are different elements that make up the event.

Careers Fair
Attend the morning session which will include chance to participate in two hands-on activities, the
opportunity to speak to organisations and companies offering courses or careers in marine, maritime and
science based fields at the Careers Exhibition
12 noon to 1pm
Beagle debate: which species would you save?
Come along and preserve a marine species for the future as a panel of five experts eagerly present to you their
reasons for saving their particular favorite on board Darwin's HMS Beagle.Chaired by Annie Russell, the
audience will have the opportunity to listen and ask questions as the panel battle it out during this fun event.
As part of your session, students will get the opportunity to participate in two activities out of a choice of six. Each session holds a
maximum of 20 students. These will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Renewables and the Marine Environment

Get stuck into marine technology in the laboratory.
Statistics of Extremes

An applied session using environmental statistics to predict extreme events.
SONAR - using sound to see what lies in the murky depths

Using sonar systems to finding fish and to explore the seabed and to detect submarines
STEM Articulate - a fast-paced twist on the original game
6
Test your students’ knowledge of ‘all that is STEM’. Students will gain an insight into courses, careers and graduates.
