Reading and Writing in the Content Area – Grades 7-12
Teachers of science, social studies and technical subjects are
aware that the Mississippi College and Career Readiness
Standards require them to include reading and writing instruction
within their daily lessons with students. Easier said than done!
Most content area teachers at the secondary level did not receive
any formal training related to teaching students to read and write
in the content area. This workshop focuses on best practices
methodology that can be effectively incorporated into the
instructional process in content area courses, while addressing the
new assessment blueprint as provided by the Mississippi
Department of Education. Teachers will acquire strategies to add
to their arsenal and administrators will go away with a greater
understanding of what to expect from content area teachers.
MSNISL Institute
An essential program that offers support for student achievement
is the school guidance counseling support system. In this oneday institute we provide professional development with your
school counselors to discuss their role in progress towards
student growth in meeting the agreed upon milestones in the
areas of student support systems. We will guide your counselors
through a process of tying their program goals to the larger goals
of their individual schools, with each counselor setting program
goals for the year, tracking them, and reporting results at the end
of the year to their administrative team. Through facilitation we
will lead your team of school counselors to create an action plan
that will align with goals to improve students’ achievement.
Making the Most of Classroom Assistants
This session is designed for all teacher assistants and
paraprofessionals who teach reading or teach in the content
areas. Participants will leave this session with the ability to
successfully utilize "The Five Essential Reading Components" in
the classroom. This will have a positive impact on MS MAP
scores.

Migrant/ELL Strategies
English Language Learners are one of the fastest growing
populations in our schools today. Teachers with English
Language Learners and Migrant Students in their classrooms
struggle with modifying instruction so these students can master
grade level standards. How do we help these culturally and
linguistically diverse students be successful in school? The
presenters of this workshop have extensive experience and
success with working with these populations and will share their
most useful and successful strategies which can be aligned with
the new MAP assessment standards blueprint.
Dyslexia and Lexiles – Making the Puzzle Pieces Fit for
Literacy Success
Though the identification of students with dyslexia is on the rise,
teachers remain ill equipped for addressing their academic needs
in a manner they consider to be effective. This workshop is
designed to offer instructional and assessment strategies that work
with students with reading difficulties. The use of Lexiles will be
discussed and how to incorporate its use in a literacy classroom.
Students that are behind in reading need to make more than one
year of growth in a school year. The strategies shared will assist
the teacher in reaching this goal.
*Supporting Literacy Through Mentoring-Strong Readers =
Strong Leaders
The Strong Readers = Strong Leaders program has published a
document to assist schools and districts in implementing a
student mentoring program that will yield improved literacy for
participating students. Attend this workshop to gain practical doable ideas for improving student performance, while
simultaneously strengthening self-confidence within students so
they are more inclined to be positive leaders and role for their
peer group.
