ACFPC Meeting Minutes: 9/4/2012 Present: Camille Horton, Kim Davidson, Amy Daily, Carla Snyder, Kathy Glahn, Betsy Wargo, Audrey Hess I. Healthy Options Update a. Continuation of ‘Photovoices’ meetings i. Participants who had expressed interest in continuing to meet (after the 3 scheduled for the Healthy Options Summer Activities, and without receiving Giant giftcards) were contacted and invited to a meeting on Tues. August 38 @ SCCAP ii. Camille and senior Gettysburg College student, Emily Constantian, organized and facilitated meeting on Aug. 28th 1. On 8/10/2012, a larger group of the summer ‘Photovoices’ organizers/facilitators (i.e. Audrey, Salma, Maura, Chandra, Emily) had met and decided Camille and Emily, with support/help from Amy Dailey, would take on continuation of meetings 2. Attendance at Aug. 28th meeting low, despite multiple calls/e-mails sent to participants- however, good discussion amongst people in attendance, some photos chosen to display at end-of-summer celebration iii. Collaboration with Jorge Perez-Rico and ‘Casa de la Cultura’ classes (replacement of LIU’s Migrant Ed. classes) is in the works to incorporate discussion topics from ‘Photovoices’ (ie. Food, healthy lifestyles, exercise, access to services) into ‘Casa de la Cultura’ class times; will then incorporate practicing English for participants iv. Recipe book still in the works- hopefully will be carried out through ‘Casa de la Cultura’ classes v. Cameras? Have all been turned in? We could redistribute them to continue. b. Healthy Options Celebration 2012 i. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 from 4:00pm-6:00pm, Rec Park Building Assembly Room ii. Will be children’s activities (including the hula-hoops!), snacks from Campus Kitchens and (potentially) the market vendors 1. Carla Snyder has spearheaded the making of hula-hoops as an activity and got a quote for materials; We have the budget to make 48 hoops (extra material could be used for next year’s programming) 2. Camille has been in touch with College students/program coordinators with Center for Public Service about setting up activity booths a. Ideally 3 activity stations, 2 physical/exercise games 3. Day of Caring Volunteers are working at CK day before, preparing snacks for the event 4. Audrey- has frozen peaches, blueberries for making smoothies? iii. Agenda for the event: 1. Camille, Audrey, Kathy Glahn, participants/vendors to talk about their experiences. 2. Presentation to be given 3. What has the feedback from surveys meant for the program? Can we do this in time with a few graphs on the wall? 4. If there are questions we missed, we can put posters up at the celebration for people to fill in. For example: Are there food items you’d like to see at the market that is not available? iv. Display of 10-12 photos from Photovoices project v. County commissioners have been sent invitations c. September vouchers are now out, along with Post-survey for assessment/research of project d. Penn State Extension classes available –Updates? from Carla i. Exploring the Small Farm Dream- 4 evening sessions, once a week for 1 month 1. need 8 participants and only have 1 so far. Wait to schedule class until have enough participants. ii. Food for Profit – Wed, November 28, 2012. 9am-4pm 1. Member of State team will provide the training. Carla will send link for registration or participants can call in for registration. Spanish translation available for registration. II. Adams County Farmers’ Market Association Update a. SNAP/EBT use? – SNAP Sales? SNAP dollars down. About $1,200 this year i. Make County Assistance office aware that SNAP is not being as utilized. ii. Flyers went out but the SNAP logo was not visible. iii. School flyer going out this week with a bigger SNAP logo to Littlestown and Gettysburg. iv. Posters on buses? Let’s look into it. v. Posters/flyers have been put up in WIC, Food Pantry, SCCAP lobby, County Assistance Office, Public Library, Manos Unidas. Other ideas? b. Emily Constantian finished the promotional video for the markets. i. “Adams County Farmers’ Market Association- EBT Benefits” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xjLYmzoGZQ ii. Discussed at last meeting: 1. Potential places for the video: Head start, clinics, pediatrician, WIC, Food Pantry 2. Maybe get digital picture frame that could play in waiting room. iii. Task for winter: Talk to doctors office , wellspan, family first about putting up in TVs for next season. iv. Health Coaches – Wellspan still developing a community resource list. We should give them info about SNAP, healthy options recruitment. c. Volunteers still needed to staff the EBT machine in September and October. Any ideas? i. Camille made a ‘digest’ post for all students, as well as faculty and staffadvertising this volunteer opportunity 1. Have gotten a couple student responses ii. Camille has contacted Jennifer Gastley at Healthy Adams County to send out email as well iii. Other ideas as mentioned at last meeting: 1. Ag teachers at high school. Ag Business students could use it as a business. 2. Messiah College – Sustainability major just opened. 3. Trinity High School – in Camp Hill has a similar focus. d. Other ACFMA updates?? III. New/upcoming items & Announcements! a. Food Hub Proposal Meeting- Thursday, Sept. 6 @ 8:00am, Ag Center i. Headed by: Carla Synder,Marketing Educator for the Ag Entrepreneurship program at Penn State Extension, Sladjana Prozo,Ag Innovations Program Manager, Penn State Extension, and Kathy Gaskin of Healthy Adams County ii. 1-page proposal for Food Hub/Distribution has been created. iii. Info gathering session with local distributor, farmers and FPC to gain info then have a larger meeting with everyone. iv. Storage, labeling standards will be addressed at meeting. v. Challenge: Who will run the food hub? Will it be a coop and LLC? How will we involve FPC? vi. Western PA by Clarion is starting a food hub as well as one on Oakland. Will look at those models. b. Promoting Ag Education in Our Classrooms- projected initiated by Catherine Lara, Specialty Crop Innovations Program Manager at Penn State Extension, and Judy Chambers, Educator, Economic/Community Development-Land Use, Penn State Extension i. Partnership between Penn State Extension Adams County, Gettysburg Area School District, Harrisburg Area Community College and Gettysburg College ii. Curriculum to be used for project: Project Food, Land, and People- from PA’s Dept. of Education iii. Meeting between Kim Davidson, CPS student Program Coordinator for Sustainability at Gettysburg College, myself, Catherine- 8/30/2012 1. Great way to connect sustainability and environmental justice issues in the community with volunteers 2. CPS student coordinator will be in charge of recruiting college students from Gettysburg College interested in volunteering 3. Curriculum will be implemented via the After School Activities Program (ASAP) in the Gettysburg Area School District—for now, just planning on Lincoln Elementary (for first attempt-maybe more schools in the Spring) iv. Let’s Get Cooking class - Betsy has been running with J’Amy for 9 years. The new law says that J’Amy as a district volunteer can’t be there. So, we need a new person to take the lead on the curriculum or combine the two. Maybe Rayna or Jeremy have volunteers idea, c. Smarter Lunchrooms Movement- Grant update from Rayna? i. Rayna and Penn State Extension’s Family and Consumer Sciences State Program Team prepared a proposal for CDC Community Transformation Grant ii. Would potentially provide Food Service Directors in School Districts with funding to have these techniques taught to them and employees of cafeteria d. ‘Go Local for Health’ Regional Health Summit- Sept. 18th @ Gettysburg Hotel, 8:00am3:00pm i. From 1:30 – 2:45 in Room 1: “Local Food Systems- How You can Get Involved– Action Planning” facilitated by Kathy Gaskin of Healthy Adams County and Cheryl Burns of Capital RC&D, both members of the South Central PA Food System Alliance ii. As advertised: “Last November our region met at a food symposium "Closing the Food Gap" which led to the creation of the South Central PA Food System Alliance. Come learn about the alliance, how to engage in your local food systems and participate in a discussion about working together regionally through this new alliance. Also, hear some first hand accounts of different aspects of local food systems located in our region.” IV. Funding news a. Anyone have any funding news? V. Discussion pieces: a. ACFPC representation at the Walking Parties i. First Fall Walking party tomorrow, Sept.5- starting from Ag Center (North Trail) ii. At meeting in regards to Obesity/Overweight Priority Area of the AC Community Health Assessment, on 8/29, The Physical Fitness Task Force representative, Colleen Umbenhouer expressed interest in FPC members being present to: 1. Talk about foods/produce in season- hand out Local Food Resource Guides 2. Hand out recipes that include produce in season 3. Include a nutrition aspect to the beginning of the walks (have a mini nutrition lesson) iii. Walks scheduled for Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26, and Oct. 3, 10 b. Healthy Options i. Wrap-up meeting for the season? 1. When? ii. Assessment/Research Paper- who would like to be involved with writing? c. Advisory Council/Board for VISTA 1. How do we want to form this group of people? 2. Separate meeting time from ACFPC meetings? 3. How could this Advisory Board benefit us? 4. Should I just attend the Circles Initiative meetings on Wednesday evenings and to the ESL classes at SCCAP to get to know/talk to the community members that are experiencing the issues related to food access disparities and the local food system? ii. General consensus? that we should ask members/participants of the Circles Initiative and the ESL classes to be ‘feedback people’ so they can have input into the initiatives FPC is doing- Possibly just use e-mail as the ‘meeting place’, but have these feedback people be included in e-mails to be able to add their thoughts. d. York County Local Food Summit – November 7. ACFPC will speak about Building a Local Food System. Camille will present, but others are welcome to join! More information to come.
