Explain: 4 5 HIGH Lord of the Flies Introduction Survival WebQuest STRANDED! You wake up in a thick tangle of jungle vines, bloody and bruised. Your clothes are torn. Your head throbs in pain. A blinding tropical sun beats down into your eyes, blurring your view of the beach ahead. Slowly, you pick yourself up and look out toward the ocean. There lies the smoldering wreck of the 747 jet that was supposed to bring you and your classmates to the Hawaiian resort you'd be staying at for your class trip. Imagine the sounds of the jungle around you... As you stumble across the beach, you discover that your classmates are equally battered, but otherwise okay. The pilots and flight attendants are nowhere to be found, though. As you stare at the wreckage, one of your classmates comes running down from a hill. "I've been to the top!" she shouts. "It's an island! No buildings, no people, no nothing!" Several kids groan in dismay. "The storm blew us totally off course," one kid tells another. "We could be anywhere." "I know," the other responds, "and cell phones won't work. The plane's black box was destroyed. Nobody knows where we are or how to get to us. We're stranded!" Dazed but mostly intact, you and your 25 classmates begin the difficult task of searching through the wrecked plane for any items that can be saved. It looks like you're going to have to fend for yourselves for the foreseeable future. YOUR TASK (TO BE COMPLETED OVER THE NEXT 3 WEEKS) In the end you will have to figure out two things: one, how to survive in the wild with only a small amount of emergency equipment; and two, how to set up rules for the society of survivors you've been forced to become. This WebQuest will help you put together a survival manual and to create a set of basic laws for your new government. You will also create a set of short diary entries detailing your quest for survival. Task The first thing to do is choose a partner. Nobody wants to end up like Tom Hanks in Castaway! You and your partner have 3 major tasks for your survival adventure... WEEK 1: 1. Create a Survival Manual containing two major elements: a) an equipment guide that describes the features and use of the five most important pieces of survival gear you've salvaged from the plane; and b) a list of five key rules for surviving in your isolated tropical environment. You will gather information from various survival websites to help you on your way. WEEK 2: 2. Create a Bill of Rights for your new island society. Come up with a list of ten basic laws for your new society and consequences for breaking them. You will study various human rights issues and societal laws during your WebQuest to model your new Bill of Rights on. Remember, you're trying to "get it right" here on your little island; the adults have screwed things up pretty badly in the outside world! WEEK 3: 3. Write a total of four diary entries (two by you, two by your partner) detailing different moments in your quest for survival on the island. Because these diary entries must reference information in your Survival Manual and Bill of Rights, you will write them after having completed the first two tasks. The purpose of the diary entries is to allow you to show how your survival knowledge and societal rules would actually work. You will visit a variety of websites to help you with these tasks. For each site visited, you will be asked to fill out a Survival Log. Your Survival Logs will help you organize the information you collect from each site so you can more easily assemble your Survival Manual, Bill of Rights, and diary entries. Your first step should be to divide up the work with your partner. Who's going to work in what pieces of equipment, survival rules, or Bill of Rights laws? Brainstorm together. How might these work in action?
