Tsunami Bulletin No.: 2

TSUNAMI ALERT CANCELLATION
A strong distant earthquake occurred in Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands at
09:12 AM, 06 February 2013 (Philippine Time), located at 10.9ºS, 165.1ºE with
depth of 33 km and a preliminary magnitude of 8.0. The Pacific Tsunami Warning
Center sea level monitoring stations confirmed the occurrence of a tsunami due to
this earthquake. At 9:29 AM 06 February 2013, PHIVOLCS issued a bulletin with
Tsunami Alert Level 1 in areas along the coast of the Philippines fronting the
Pacific Ocean, stating that the concerned public is advised to be on standby for
possible evacuation.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) reported a 0.91m tsunami recorded by
the tide gauge in Santa Cruz Islands but the recorded tsunami wave height in
Vanuatu, closer to the Philippines, is only 0.26m. The current trend of observed
wave heights suggests that the threat of a hazardous tsunami has passed. Hence,
tsunami alert for the Philippines is now CANCELLED.
This will be the last bulletin issued for this event.
