PURPOSE: "TO DISCOVER, GATHER, AND PRESERVE OUR HISTORY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS"
NEWSLETTER
Issue 21, Spring 2015
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: You have honored me with your confidence for the past five years and
what an exciting 5 years that has been! We started with a newly created Board of Directors, reviewed
and updated the by-laws. We interacted with many of the other historical and preservation groups in the
Lancaster area. In 2014 as a tribute to the Lancaster Conservancy's newly acquired land in the northern
part of the township the fall tour was held there and at the Welsh Mountain Community Park. To make
the tour more integrated to the area Grave Concern also participated which was the first time the Society
asked another group to co-sponsor an event. After a long hiatus the idea of a bus trip was reinstituted by
Sue Summers to Pea Patch Island, a historic fort near New Castle. The trip was so popular we hope to
host another one. Donna Mann, society member, is dedicated to the history of our newly acquired
Kennedy Tenant House. She is providing the museum committee and the Board with detailed analysis of
the renovation needs and state and local requirements that the house must undergo before museum status
is achieved. Her work in that line and her team's findings at the several digs held in the fall are causing a
stir in the extended Lancaster County community. Paul Herr and the museum committee are forging
ahead with ideas to make the building visitor friendly and interest is rising in the society. The new
chairmen of the society's annual spring event have enlarged it to a full day event and changed the
format, adding many new activities. It sounds like a real winner and we think there will be something for
everyone, so save June 6th for the excitement. Over the past 4 years our webmaster, Wanda Smale, has
established a website to go to for updated information about the Society. We get over 30 requests a year
for genealogy information, and people go to the site for current activities. Many book orders come
through the site. The nominating committee this year consists of Alfred Gerhardt, Betsy Lodge, Anna
Mast, and Anna Skiles. They have the slate ready for the April member meeting presentation, with
attending members voting in May and induction at the June meeting. Many hands are helping make the
society's task easier. If you are asked to serve please consider the reason we began this journey: to make
sure we discover, gather and preserve our history for future generations. - Leona Baker, President

MANY THANKS................. As I retire as your President, it is with wonderful memories of the exciting
things accomplished in these past five years. Many of these were outlined in the President's letter. But
I also want to thank those others who make this organization a dynamic force in a day when other
small societies are closing down: All of the members of the Gala Committee, so long chaired by Lois
Schrock, Annabelle Herr, and Doris Wambold; all members of the Museum Committee, tirelessly
chaired by Paul Herr. Also Doris Wambold who creates the member meeting fliers each month and
Clarence Lefever who places the announcement in the local papers each month; Betsy Lodge, Ken
Skiles, Sue Summers, Wanda Smale, Alfred Gerhardt and Yvonne Styer who have distributed the fliers
each month; Wanda Smale who puts stuff on the WEB so fast; Alfred Gerhardt and Andi Lingenfelter
who have TRIED over the years to get me to do the Roberts' Rules bit correctly (not often with
success); Anna and Leonard Groff who have so often dropped everything to help with some project.
Joan Lorenz who was always an ear to bounce ideas off of; Paul Herr and Dick Patterson who have
transported me due to my injuries or car trouble; AND biggest joy of all, though I have thanked them
before, the people who took over after my injury in 2013 and kept the Society so smoothly running
that not a link was broken, mainly Sue Summers, Anna and Leonard Groff, Andi Lingenfelter, Joan
Lorenz. The Society accomplished so much! With our very active Museum committee leading the way
2015 should be another winning year.

THE FAMILY COMMUNITY GALA
Saturday, June 6, 2015, 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Salisbury Township Park, Gap, PA
Now in its 11th year the Gala has been refreshed and revamped into a full-day family friendly community event.
We are excited to announce that we have added a community yard sale, a bake-off competition, many children's
activities, and our music this year will be a Battle of the Bands competition for local groups. Admission to the
event will be FREE. We will be starting off the morning with the yard sale at 8:00 am and ending with the awards
ceremony for the competitions to start around 5:00 pm. Food will be for sale from various vendors throughout
the entire day.
COMMUNITY YARD SALE & USED BOOK SALE, 8:00 a.m. - ?
The first event of the Family Community Gala for 2015 will be a Community Yard Sale and Used Book Sale. The
general public is invited to sign up for a space to sell their wares whether it is second hand items, crafts, and/or
business sales (such as Pampered Chef, Thirty-One, etc.). There is a small fee to participate, and you must
provide your own table or tarp. There are limited spaces available, so reserve your space now to guarantee your
spot. If we still have spaces available on the day of the event they can be purchased on a first-come, first-served
basis, but it is better to book in advance. The fee is $15 for non-business related sales and $25 for business
related sales. We will open for set up starting at 7:00 am, and you should be ready to sell by 8:00 am. We ask
that everyone stays at least until noon, but you are welcome to stay and sell all day. The HSST will be selling
doughnuts and coffee all morning. If you would like to sign up for a space, please call Doris at 717-442-4844.
BAKE-OFF COMPETITION, 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
During the Family Community Gala we will be hosting a bake-off competition. There will be several categories
from breads and pastries to cakes, cookies, and pies. We will even have a category for kids - Gingerbread
Houses! The community is invited to sign up for this competition. On the day of the competition, you will bring
your creation to the park to be tasted and judged. There is a small entry fee of $1.00 per submission. Who will
be doing the judging? Your community members! For $5.00 any member of the community can sample each of
the bake-off creations and judge the winners for each category. The only exception to the tasting will be the
kids' gingerbread houses. Please make sure if you sign up to bring a sample for viewing, and enough "samples"
for at least 50 people. To sign up for this competition please call 717-442-4071. We will only be accepting a
limited amount of entries for each category, so please call early to reserve your spot in the competition. Set up
will start at 1:00 pm with the taste-testing to being at 2:00 pm. The prizes and awards will be handed out during
the awards ceremony to begin approximately at 5:00 pm. Each category will have a 1st and 2nd prize winner,
and there will be a Grand Prize winner overall.
BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITION, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Are you part of a band or know someone who is? Would you like to have your music heard and try to win a prize
at the same time? All local bands are invited to sign up for our Battle of the Bands. Spaces are limited, so make
sure you sign up early! There is a small entry fee of $20, and you will need to provide your own sound
equipment. Each group will be allowed a 20 minute set, and all we ask is that you keep your songs “PG” due to
the nature of our event. We will have a staging area, but please be prepared to set up and tear down in 10-15
minutes or less. All judging will be done by your peers in the community. Votes will be tallied at the end of the
event, and the winners will be announced during the awards ceremony at 5:00 pm. To sign up or if you have
questions please call Andi at 717-468-6424.
We look forward to seeing you there, and appreciate your support of our endeavors and your support of The
Historical Society of Salisbury Township.
- Andi and Mike Lingenfelter, Gala co-chairs

LOOKING FOR INFO: Years ago my cousin lived on the farm on the corner of Churchtown Road and Meadville
Road. She found a newspaper article from the summer of 1944 which talked about the Cambridge Flying Field
that was to open. It was a civilian project. An ancestor told her that the field had to be built in Lancaster County
because during the war no flying fields could be built in Chester County. The flying field had instruction
equipment but no barracks. Rides were given along with those wishing to take flying instruction. She would like
to know if anyone has any information about the Cambridge Flying Field. Thank you for your help. – Donna

MUSEUM UPDATE
The museum committee has proposals for the required land management plan for the 0.7 acre lot that
includes the Kennedy Tenant House from two engineering firms. The proposals address storm water
control, the location of a parking lot, walks, ramps and the handicap ADA restroom. Two locations for
the restroom are being studied. One location is to attach it to the south side of the house with a
basement for storage. The other location for the rest room would be on a pad adjacent to a walk on
the west side of the KTH. This site would provide access to the already in place public sewer line.
The committee is gathering recommendations for the stabilization of the house's foundation stone
walls. One wall has a crack in it and another section of wall is bulging inward. The committee is
considering methods to reinforce and shore up the first-floor floor joists.
Donna Mann, archaeologist and society member, has completed a feasibility study of the KTH. Donna's
research estimates the cost to convert the KTH to a public museum to exceed $250,000. If more
information is desired on the feasibility study please contact Donna.
The museum committee would welcome additional members to help with renovation plans, public
relations and fundraising.
- Paul Herr, Museum Committee Chairman
A SHORT POEM FOR THOSE WHO GIVE OF THEMSELVES
You say you have little to give,
That your talents are meager,
That your shortcomings define you?
A harsh judgment, my friend.
For, which of us
Has gifts in full measure?
Which of us can be content
With his own abilities?
Life is not what we are,
But what we become.
You say you have little to give?
Which of us has more?
Offer the little you have
With a generous heart.
Someone will accept it.
Perhaps many will accept it,
And treasure it,
And seek your beauty,
And bask in your light.
Offer the little you have
Little is more than enough
For, what is the moon
But a pitted mass
Of rock and clay,
Yet, how beautifully
She reflects the light
Of creation---And oh, how constantly
We love her!

LEARNING ABOUT THE KENNEDYS
From
-History of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania by Ellis and Evans (Printed in 1883)
-History of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, PA by Joan Lorenz
-Cemetery Record of Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery
History of Salisbury Township, page 41
“The small stone house across the road from Bellevue was occupied for several years by a sister
of grandfather’s, a widow with three daughters, Mrs. Andrew Buyers.”
I wondered who this Mrs. Andrew Buyers was.
History of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, page 1058
An article about Winfield Kennedy mentions his siblings – the children of Maxwell and Margaret
Kennedy. There were seven that reached adult age.
1. Ellen or Eleanor 1803 – 1855 – Buried at Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery, Gap. (The
gravestone has Ellen; the History of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania has Eleanor. But both
have the same birth and death years.)
2. James 1806 – 1832
3. William Maxwell 1809 – 1836 “Married Henrietta Bryant and they had one child, a daughter
Anna Margaret.” William died when he was 26 and was buried at Bellevue Presbyterian
Cemetery, Gap.
In my record of the Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery I noticed another William M Kennedy. And I
wondered who he was. Ah…two years after William’s death his youngest brother Winfield and his wife
Jane had a son (in 1838) and they named him William M Kennedy. Unfortunately, he also died young.
His gravestone says enough to make me curious. “WILLIAM M KENNEDY / BORN JULY 19, 1838 / DIED
AT MACKINAC, MICH / AUG 24, 1863 / AGED 25 YEARS / 1 MONTH & 5 DAYS” I wonder what he was
doing in Michigan?
4. Robert T. – 1811 – 1873 “Settled in Pittsburgh where he became one of its leading
merchants and manufacturers. He married Charlotte Hambright of Lancaster. They had nine
children. Robert died in Pittsburgh in 1873.”
5. Jane b. 1813 – “Widow of Andrew C Buyers. He was formerly a merchant at the Gap. Three
children: Josephine, Letitia, and Margaret. Mrs. Buyers is living with her daughter in
Bloomington, Illinois.”
Oh! Widow of Andrew Buyers…and she has three daughters. This must be who lived in “our Kennedy
Tenant House!”
Record of Bellevue Presbyterian Cemetery
In the oldest part of the cemetery north of the church and west of the drive, “OUR MOTHER / JANE E
BUYERS / daughter of / MAXWELL & MARGARET/ Kennedy / died at Bloomington, / Illinois April 18 /
1887 / In the 74 year / of her age.
Oh! She was so loyal to Gap, the place where she grew up and lived many years that she wanted to be
buried here. I suppose her body came by train. I wonder…did her daughter travel with her mother’s
body? At least it was April and not in the heat of summer.
