trend line was used to obtain the expected recovered chloroform mass at the 7th filling and
emptying of the reaction vessel. The mass of recovered chloroform was lower because the reactor
vessel was heated and equilibrated to 45°C before emptying and more chloroform remained in
the vessel because it condensed at the colder top walls of the reaction vessel. The mass loss of
chloroform due to evaporation at 45°C was thus found to be 2.48g or 0.0208mol based on the
difference between the extrapolated value from the trend line and the actual mass of collected
chloroform at 45°C.

As shown in Fig. S1, we accounted for the loss of solvent during experimentation at elevated temperatures
due to condensation onto the colder reactor lid. For the experiments with added acetone the condensate is no
longer a pure solvent and we would like to briefly address in how far this would affect the solvent
composition. For simplicity we assume the mixed solvent to behave ideal and therefore apply Raoult’s law as
shown in equation (S1) to obtain the partial pressures, Pj, of the two components from the mole fractions, xj,
and the vapor pressures, Pj* and to predict the relative amounts that condense for the two components in the
mixture.

We further assume that the same number of molecules condense on the walls of the vessel at higher
temperatures as we determined for pure chloroform.
The vapor pressures of pure chloroform and acetone needed in equation 2 can be obtained from the Antoine
equation, shown in equation S2, where the needed Antoine coefficients were obtained from the literature (D.
R. Stull, Indust. Engin. Chem. 39, 517-540 (1947); D. Ambrose, C. H. S. Sprake, and T. R., J. Chem. Thermodyn. 6,
693-700 (1974).

Specifically, the Antoine coefficients A, B, and C are 4.20772, 1233.129 and -40.953 respectively for CHCl3,
and 4.42448, 1312.253, and -32.445 respectively for acetone. For 318 K the vapor pressure of pure
chloroform amounts to 0.574 bar and for acetone 0.678 bar. The partial pressures for each compound were
calculated using equation S1 and added to obtain the total vapor pressure. The mole fractions of the vapor
phase, yi, were calculated using Dalton’s law as the ratio of partial pressure and total vapor pressure Ptot, as
shown in equation S3

Since we assume same number of molecules condense as we determined for pure chloroform, the amount of
each component that forms condensation can be directly calculated. At 318.2K, xi was 0.0442 while the
corrected value would be 0.0444. This results in a difference of only 0.46%. For CHCl 3 the percent
difference between corrected and uncorrected xi is even less, since the relative amount of CHCl3 is much
higher. Since there is no significant difference in the concentrations from the partial pressures, the original
concentration of mixed solvent added was used for calculations.
