1. Portrayals of the Vietnam War in selected examples of film and literature
The Vietnam War was an important event in history, but also in American culture and
in the American “national psyche”. The thesis should examine how the war and its
participants (soldiers, generals, politicians, etc.) were portrayed in film and literature.
(Choose 1 - 3 works to discuss, at least one of which is a novel). Some examples include
“Born of the Fourth of July” (book by Ron Kovic, film directed by Oliver Stone), “The
Deer Hunter” (film), and “Birdy” (book by William Wharton, film directed by Alan
Parker), etc. How do authors of such works describe Americans’ attitudes toward
heroism, racism, poverty, American military power, the anti-war movement and so on?
Also, the lexicology connected with the war and the anti-war movement may be
discussed. It is possible to compare a novel with the screenplay based on the same story.
2. Creative Uses of Punctuation in Literature
This thesis will analyze how punctuation is used to create artistic effects in literary texts
(poems and extracts from novels or short stories). Rules of English punctuation should
be described, and the reasons why authors sometimes bend or break the rules should be
analyzed, using several examples.
3. Analysis of Instruction Manuals in the Field of Fine Art
An examination of selected texts from art instructional manuals. Which kinds of
language support creativity? Structure, lexis, vocabulary and stylistics may all be
discussed. Examples may be taken from DIY (do-it-yourself) manuals, how-to-paint or
how-to-draw books, and more unusual examples such as “The Guerilla Art Kit” (by
Keri Smith), “Snip, Burn, Solder, Shred” (by David Erik Nelson), etc.
4. The Jewish-American Humor of the Borscht Belt
In America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jewish immigrants from Europe
established resorts and vacation communities in the Catskill mountains near New York
City (the region became known as the “Borscht Belt”). Comedy shows become popular
and developed a unique style, which spread to the mainstream of American pop culture.
This thesis should discuss the history of this style of humor and its influence on
American humor in TV and film, including many words used in US English that derive
from Yiddish.
5. The Language of Racism in the U.S. Media Today
In the last few years there have been numerous incidents of innocent black men being
shot and killed by white police in the US (Michael Brown, John Crawford, Eric Garner,
Kenneth Chamberlain, Trayvon Martin, Ramarley Graham, Oscar Grant, Amadou
Diallo...). Many of these incidents have been followed by mass protests (some still
ongoing). This thesis will examine the language used in media reports of these incidents.
How does the choice of words and portrayal of the actors influence the public
perception?

1. Chinese-American Authors and Their Depiction of Immigrant Life in US
(Authors to be specified upon agreement with student)

Student should shortly introduce chosen Chinese-American authors and the way how
they depict the life of Asian immigrants in US. The literary depiction should be then
shortly compared with the reality as described in relevant historical sources. Suggested
authors to be discussed: Brian Leung, Maxime Hong Kingston.
2. Shrek – A Comparative Analysis of Czech Translation of an Animated Movie with
Commentary and Glossary
(Shrek – Srovnávací analýza českého překladu animovaného filmu s komentářem a
glosářem)
Student may shortly introduce the issue of movie translation, dubbing and subtitles
creation; choose one of the Shrek movies and comment on the Czech translation of
specific aspects – fairy tale characters, cultural phenomena, etc. – problems, relevance,
Czech vs. American context, etc.
3. Depiction of Civil Rights Movement in Comic Books and Graphic Novels
(Zobrazení hnutí za občanská práva v komiksech a grafických novelách)
Student should introduce the US Civil Rights Movement and the way how it is depicted
in comic books and graphic novels, comparing the literary depiction with some relevant
historical sources. The recommended primary source: John Lewis – March: Book One,
Book Two. MLK and The Montgomery Story.
4. Poetry Slam – Modern Ways of Reading Poetry in the US and GB
(Poetry Slam – Moderní způsob, jak číst a prezentovat poezii v USA a Velké Británii)
Student should introduce the phenomenon of poetry slam, to describe its beginnings,
characteristic features, inspirations, etc. Student can compare the US, UK and Czech
poetry slams, introduce some of the poets and conduct a field research in form of
questionnaire on the knowledge of the phenomenon in the Czech Republic.
5. The World of Photography – Translation of Chosen Texts with Commentary and
Glossary
(Svět fotografie – Překlad vybraných textů s komentářem a glosářem)
Student should choose several short texts related to the topic of photography, translate
them and accompany them with commentary and glossary.

Práce by měla zasadit texty o fenoménu terorismu do kontextu zlomových
historických událostí ve Spojených státech, jako byla velká hospodářská krize,
druhá světová válka, vietnamská válka, irácká válka a zamyslet se nad důvody
těchto kriminálních činů.
Thesis should place texts about terrorism in the context
of traumatic historical events like
The Great Depression, the Second World War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq war
and analyze the reasons for this criminal acts.

Thesis should describe the basic principles of the former Czechoslovakian
dissent and underground movement and its social context and compare these
findings with the contemporary principles of the American dissent and
underground movement

religious organizations and political power in the USA and suggest the preventive steps
which should eliminate these cases.
