Guidelines for Papers
This year’s AAWP conference aims to encourage the discussion of ideas by practitioners in the field, academics
and teachers of creative writing while maintaining the academic integrity of published proceedings.
All sessions, including requested panels, will be themed and organised to encourage proper exchange of ideas.
Presentations will be 20 minutes, except where panels are larger and this is by request.
A discussion of 10 minutes per paper will follow, allowing participants to expand on their ideas and engage with
others. A similar format applies to refereed creative works (as per ERA guidelines), and creative sessions of a
broader kind.
Refereed Proceedings
Refereed Academic Stream:
Abstract: 250 words plus 100 word biography.
Paper (double-blind refereed): 4000 words
Publication: Conference proceedings.
Conference presentations: 20 minute paper, followed by 10 minute question time.
Refereed Creative Stream:
Abstract: 250 words plus 100 word biography.
Work (double-blind refereed):
Up to 4000 words.
Up to 100 lines of poetry.
Research Statement – as per Appendix C of ERA guidelines
http://www.arc.gov.au/pdf/era12/ERA2012_SubmissionGuidelines.pdf
Publication: Conference Proceedings.
Conference presentations: 20 minute presentation of work, with 2-3 minutes presentation of research
statement or rationale.
Please format your work in the following way:
•
12pt
•
1.5 spacing
•
A4, standard margins
•
Times New Roman
•
Harvard Author-Date Style, ‘in-text’ (single) citations with ‘References’ list at end.
•
Endnotes only.
•
Insert page numbers - bottom centre.
•
Include a header with the paper title centred and in dark grey font.
Please submit your paper like this:
•
Attach your paper to an email with the subject line: AAWP15 Submission for Refereed Proceedings
•
Include in the body of your email:
•
•
-
Your name as you would like it used in the conference (title, name, institutional affiliation)
-
Final paper title
-
Abstract, as you want it printed in the conference booklet
-
A bio of 60-100 words.
Include in your attached paper:
-
FINAL version of your paper title
-
Intended conference booklet abstract at the top of the paper itself.
Submit the paper as an attachment Word Doc. file (not docx, as not all people can open these files).
Use the Save-as function and change the version to Word 97-2004 or Word 97-2003 in some computers).
•
Name your file with the first 4-5 words of your paper’s title (not your surname etc.) without
articles/prepositions/conjunctions etc. ie: 'Haunting the Future in the Arts' would become
HAUNTINGFUTUREARTS.doc.
•
Due to a blind-refereeing process, do not include your name anywhere in the paper, including in
headers and footers.
•
Go into 'document properties' and remove all identifying features. Also remove any references to your
own prior works etc. which could identify you to the referees (replace with ****, etc.). Again, this is important for
the integrity of the double-blind process.
•
Papers not conforming to these guidelines will not be forwarded to referees.
Non-refereed Proceedings
Academic Stream:
Abstract: 200 words plus 100 word biography.
Publication: NA.
Conference presentations: 10 minute summary of argument as a contribution to a panel, except if you need
more time and contact me prior to the event.
Creative Stream:
Proposals for creative work are encouraged, including collaborations and performances. The word count is
flexible, but you should aim at a 10-minute performance. Again, if you need more time, contact me ASAP.
Your work should be accompanied by a 100-word biography.
There will be different venues to accommodate non-refereed work.
Presentation: 10 minute reading or performance.
Publication: upon invitation, or nudging on your part—look out for editors in the audience.
