Join an interpretive guide for a FREE guided hike from the National
Monument Visitor Center. Until December 31st the area is open to
explore Dead Indian Canyon and Carrizo Canyon, home to the
endangered Peninsular Bighorn sheep. Bring plenty of water and
wear appropriate footwear.

Coachella Valley Water District Imperial Dam Bus Tour

Join a fascinating and educational 11 hour luxury tour and learn
about the history and importance of water in the Coachella Valley.

eradicate invasive plant species from our desert landscape. These
plants impose a risk to our native flora and fauna, in removing them
we hope to give the native plants and animals a better chance the
thrive. Work is easy/moderate, bring plenty of water, long pants,
gloves, close-toed shoes and sun protection.

Investigate the special geological features that exist in the
Monument through hands on activities and learn why this side of the
mountains is a “desert”. Have fun learning why these mountains
ROCK and earn the “Geology Rocks!” badge.

the next great earthquake in the Coachella Valley. It could happen

Fault strikes again!

In the Indian Canyons, near Palm Springs, hike through rolling hills
to a wall of maidenhair ferns in a natural palm oasis. Bring plenty of

Coachella Valley Wildflower Festival!
Saturday, March 2; 9 am – 4 pm
Spend the day with your family and friends in support of the
National Monument and Friends of the Desert Mountains. Join us in
search of wildflowers with guided hikes and nature walks, and enjoy
kids’ activities, plein-air painting, various workshops, raffles, and
vendors. Free entry to event. Food and merchandise will be
available for purchase.
Wildflower Bus Tour
Tuesday, March 5; 8 am - 3 pm
Join our search to find as many spring wildflowers as possible!
Explore with us on a luxury coach to locate desert plants in bloom.
Several stops will allow for visiting the sights on foot. Field guides,
handouts and hand lenses are provided. Bring a sack lunch,
comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a camera.

Weed Warriors

Join National Monument staff and volunteers in our mission to
eradicate invasive plant species from our desert landscape. Work is
easy/moderate, bring plenty of water, long pants, gloves, close-toed
shoes and sun protection.

Earth Day Bird-a-Thon-Century Run Bus Tour
Friday, April 19; 7:30 am – 4 pm
Guide: Kurt Leuschner, Professor of Natural Resources, College of
the Desert
Whether you are a beginner or a serious birder, enjoy spectacular
desert and mountain scenery on a guided bus tour to well-known
birding and nature hotspots in and around the Coachella Valley.
Water and snacks will be provided. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy at
one of our stops along the way. Before the day is over we hope to
find 100 different bird species, have lots of fun and raise money for
conservation.
Location: Meet at parking lot of the McDonalds restaurant, corner
of Ramon Rd and Varner Rd on the north side of the 10 freeway.
Arrive at 7:15 am for an on time 7:30am departure.

that are just waiting for you to discover! Get ready to see the desert

events that happened right here in the National Monument. Be

Cactus Springs Hike-Hwy 74
Friday, May 10; 8 am – 1 pm
Join us for a guided hike along the Cactus Springs Trail. Enjoy
cooler spring temperatures and explore the transition zone. Check
out Prickly Pear Cactus and Pinyon Pines as you hike to Horsethief
Creek. Bring plenty of water, snack/lunch, sun protection and wear
closed-toe shoes.
Hike Rating: ~5 miles, moderate to strenuous, 600 ft. elevation gain

Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail Wildflower Wonderland
Walk
Saturday, May 18; 8 am – 2:30 pm
A lovely hike through chaparral and Pinyon Pine/Juniper woodland
with a dazzling variety of trees, shrubs and wildflowers at this
5000 foot transition zone between coastal and desert environments.
This is a moderate stroll as we appreciate the blooms and scenery.
Bring water, food, sunscreen, camera and appropriate dress.
Hike Rating: 5 miles, moderate, 500 ft. elevation gain
