In this chapter, your child will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers. Below you will find key vocabulary words from the chapter and activities you can do with your child at home to support the mathematics we are learning in class. If you have any questions or concerns about this chapter or your child’s progress, please feel free to email or call me. Sincerely, Annette Blue Math Teacher Chapter 3: Integers Vocabulary Absolute value - the distance the number is from zero on a number line Additive inverse - two integers that are opposites; the sum of an integer and its additive inverse is zero Graph - the process of placing a point on a number line or on a coordinate plane at its proper location Integer - any number from the set {…, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, …} where … means continues without end Negative integer - an integer that is less than zero; negative integers are written with a - sign Opposites - two integers are opposites if they are represented on the number line by points that are the same distance from zero, but on opposite sides of zero; the sum of two opposites is zero Positive integer - an integer that is greater than zero; they are written with or without a + sign Zero pair - the result when one positive counter is paired with one negative counter; the value of a zero pair is zero ‘ Hands-On Activity Materials: positive and negative counters Combine a set of 2 positive counters and 4 positive counters. Find the total number of counters. 2 + 4 = 6 Combine a set of 3 negative counters and 5 negative counters. Find the total number of counters. -3 + -5 = -8 Combine a set of 6 positive counters and 1 negative counter. Remove all pairs of positive and negative counters. Find the total number of remaining counters. 6 + -1 = -5 Continue this activity with different numbers of counters. On-line Activity Find a map of the world with latitude and longitude lines marked. Research how positions on Earth are described using degrees of latitude and degrees of longitude. Compare and contrast lines of latitude and lines of longitude with the coordinate plane.
