Sid Narrator 1:This is the story of Ebeneezer Scourge. He was a regular kid at BCS who liked to hang out
with his friends , play football and have fun. He was a popular kid, bright and funny and clever but there
was one problem-he was an eco-bandit
Everyone: dun dun duuuuuun!!
Narrator 1:He would leave the faucet running while he brushed his teethEveryone: loud gasp!
Narrator 2:He would pour way too much cereal into his bowl every morning, More than he could ever
eat , then he would just throw the rest awayEveryone:Loud Gasp
Narrator 1:He woke up so late every day that he missed carpool and then would make his mom sit with
the engine running burning fuel while she waited for himEveryone: Even louder gasp!!
Grace:Narrator 2:Worst of all he wouldn’t recycleBen: screams!!
Hannah E:What have you got for lunch today Ebenezeer?
Ebeneezer:A can of soda, a lunchable, a bag of apples and a chocolate pudding.
Narrator 1:While Ebeneezer eats his lunch happily all around him people were recycling and packing
away their Tupperware containers. He didn’t notice a thing.
Ebeneezer stands up and goes to the trash can and is about to dump it all in the trash when…
Kid 1:Stop Ebeneezer-why are you throwing all that into the trash can?
Ebeneezer:What do you mean?
Kid 1:You can recycle that can and the plastic from the chocolate pudding and apple bag
Ebeneezer:Re-what? Leave me alone kid, I’m waaaaay too cool to recycle !!!
Narrator 2:And that was how Ebeneezer was every day. He created about 7.5 pounds of trash every day,
which added up to ----pounds of trash per year. He truly was the worst kind of eco bandit. That night he
went to bed without a care in the world but as he snored…..as he snored…. A strange creature entered
his room
Everyone: make oooo noises - enter Mother Earth. She leans over him but nothing happens. She ahems
but nothing happens. She kicks him but nothing happens.
Hannah Mother earth:Hit it boys—if you like it then you should have put a ring on it
He wakes up startled.
Ebeneezer Who are you
Mother Earth:I am mother Earth
Ebeneezer Mother who
Mother Earth Mother earth
Ebeneezer What are you doing here
Mother Earth :You are an eco bandit Ebeneezer Scourge. You are wasteful with my resources; you litter
and don’t take of me. Tonight you will be visited by three spirits who will teach you the error of your
ways. Make sure you listen carefully to them or beware….beware….beware-fades away
Ebeneezer That lunchable I had for lunch must have been bad-I’m having strange nightmares.
Narrator 1 Later that night another strange creature enters his room. (Two silver trees)
Tree:Ahem
Kick bed
Ebeneezer Who are you?
JuliaTree: I am the spirit of the trees
Ebeneezer Spirit of the trees? Boy that lunchable was bad!!Why are you here?
Tree Because you and others like you are killing me
Ebeneezer I’m not killing anything
Tree Yes you are –every time you use and throw away a paper product that means more of my kind
have to be chopped down to make even more paper products. I provide homes for all sorts of creatures,
I provide shade and most importantly I make oxygen for the planet. About 8 million square kilometers of
me have been cleared off the planet-that’s about one half of all the trees on that ever existed . At this
rate by the year 2030 only ten percent of all the forests in the world will be left.
Ebeneezer That’s awful what can I do
Tree Simple things make a difference like:
Grayson: writing on both sides of the paper,
Ben: cancel your junk mail,
Rory when the printer doesn’t automatically print your document problem solve first instead of hitting
print twenty times,
Alex bring a cloth napkin to school and most importantly of all
Everyone: recycle !!!
Tree: at least 36% of landfill waste is comprised of paper products-think before you trash Ebeneezerthink before you trash!!!!
He sleeps
Narrator 2:A while later another strange spirit enter his room-(I’m a Barbie girl in a Barbie world)
Plastic:Ahem
Shake
Ebeneezer Who are you?
Plastic :I’m plastic
Ebeneezer What
Karrington Plastic :I’m plastic. Plastic is one of the most disposable materials in U.S. culture. We
throw away our milk bottles, soda bottles, water bottles, trash bags, grocery bags, product packaging,
and more every day without giving it a second thought. Plastic makes up much of the streetside litter
found in cities and throughout the countryside, and it’s rapidly filling up our landfills as well.
Our country’s landfills are closing at a rate of around two per day. The landfill-space crisis is a big
problem in cities, where inner-city trash dumps are often filled to overflowing , and surrounding
communities are unwilling to allow new landfills to come to their neighborhoods.
Nobody is quite sure how long it takes for plastic to biodegrade—it hasn’t been around long enough,
and the first plastics made are still around today. Scientists believe, however, that plastics will take
hundreds of years to degrade fully—if not longer. Plastics as we know them have only been around a
hundred years, and they are already a problem. Imagine five hundred years’ worth of plastics in our
landfills.
Ebeneezer That’s awful what can I do?
Plastic there are many simple changes you can make
Mary Stop using plastic grocery bags and use cloth reusable ones instead,
Don :don’t use plastic water bottles use a reusable container instead,
Joey don’t use plastic disposable knives and forks bring reusable ones instead ,
and most importantly of all:
Everyone: Recycle
Plastic: Plastic bottles make up approximately 11% of the contents of landfills. Think before you trashThink before your trash Ebeneezer, think before you trash……
Narrator 1:Later that night yet another strange spirit enters (want be trash)
Ebeneezer:Who are you?
Gwyneth Trash: trash
Ebeneezer And why are you here?
Trash To tell you all about me
Did you know that Garbage or trash is a major form of environmental pollution these days?
If we put all of the solid waste collected in the U.S. in a line of average garbage trucks, that line of trucks
could cross the country, extending from New York City to Los Angeles, more than 100 times
The average American discards seven and a half pounds of garbage every day .Do you know where all
your garbage goes?-Landfills- There are 1,794 landfills in the United States, down from 20,000 in the
early 1970s. The EPA estimates that they will be full in 20 years.Where will we put our garbage then?
Thomas:Many types of garbage takes hundreds of years to properly decompose when thrown away.
Aaron:Milk cartons take 5 Years to decompose
Colin: Leather shoes take 25 to 40 years.
Ian :Nylon clothes take 30 to 40 years for decomposition.
GG Plastic bags decompose in 15 to 1000 years.
Jamar Aluminum cans take 80 to 100 years.
Grayson Styrofoam anything never decomposes.
Ebeneezer; That’s awful what can I do?
Trash: Make small changes in your day
Hannah Only put on your plate what you can eat
Rory Pack a trash free lunch with reusable Tupperware
Alex Buy basket lunches instead of Styrofoam lunches
Most Importantly of all
Everyone: Recycle
Trash:About 90% of the contents of our bins could be reused or recycled.
Think twice before throwing the trash into dustbin.Think before you trash…. Ebeneezer, think before
you trash…..
Narrator 2 The next morning….
Ebeneezer: Wow!! I really need to change my ways . I didn’t think that I was doing such harm to the
planet by not thinking and not recycling. If I change my ways then maybe I can encourage other people
to change too, and together we can really make a difference. I’m going to start right now!!
Narrator 1:He turned off the faucet while he brushed his teethEveryone: claps
Narrator 2:He poured just enough cereal into his bowl and ate it all with no waste
Everyone:claps
Narrator 1:He woke up on time and was in the car before his mom even turned the engine on
Everyone: Claps
Narrator 2:Most of all he learned to recycleEveryone: Cheers
Narrator 1 Everyday you now find Ebeneezer manning the cans and educating people about what they
could recycle. Sometimes people are rude to him and tease him and taunt him but he doesn’t give up.
He had seen a vision of the future of earth , one that he didn’t like. He knew that changing people habits
would be difficult but that it was too important to give up. Ebeneezer has gone from being and eco
bandit to and eco hero!!
Rory: You can be an eco hero too! Its not that hard, you just need to make small changes like using a
cloth shopping bag. Did you know that Americans throw away some 100 billion plastic bags each year. If
500, 000 kids choose reusable shopping bags instead of plastic for one month, they could stop 7.5
million plastic bags ending up in landfills.
Aaron: Between thanksgiving and new year the average American household increases its trash output
by 25 percent- that 5 million extra tons of garbage. Wrap your gifts with newspaper or other recycled
gift bags and get your friends and family to do the same. When you receive a gift wrapped in new
wrapping paper, save it for future use. If 500, 000 kids replaced just three sheets of paper with reused
paper or newspaper they would save enough paper to cover 100 football fields.
Don : Take steps to recycle at home and school. If 500 000 kids recycled just one more pound of trash
each day they’d decrease the amount of waste going into landfills by 2000 tons that’s the same as 325
elephants!!Do you find it hard to separate your trash int0 three categories-paper, plastic and cans?
Think about the people in the Japanese town of Kamikatsu. They recycle their trash into 34 categories in
the hopes of being totally trash free by 2020.
