Research Associate Software Developer (Geophysics applications)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed term position as a Research Associate Software
Developer (Geophysics applications) with Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC) at the National University of
Ireland, Galway. This position is industry funded and will be based in ICHEC’s Dublin office. The position is available
from 1st October 2013 until contract end date of 31st December 2015.
Job Description: This position will play a major role in developing ICHEC’s programme of industry R&D engagement
in the Geophysics domain and will focus on the delivery of pre-competitive research collaborations and consultancy
services. ICHEC’s engagement is mostly based around the application of novel computing solutions and platform
technologies, relevant skills include but are not restricted to:






advanced numerical and modelling techniques (e.g., reverse-time migration);
software development (with PRINCE2 and Agile or PMP project management);
advanced skills in leading edge technologies (e.g. high-performance computing and many-core architectures
such as Intel Xeon Phi and NVIDIA GPGPUs);
proven parallel code development experience using C or Fortran together with OpenMP and MPI;
data management workflow management; and
immersive visualisation.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a track record of software development in a pre-competitive industry
environment. Applicants must have a degree, and a post graduate degree in a relevant area such as science &
engineering, mathematics or computer sciences, or equivalent professional experience. He/she must also
demonstrate strong numerical and problem-solving skills. Prior experience of software development in a precompetitive industry environment is highly desirable. Experience in software development for Geophysics applications
is also desirable. Candidates should have good communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and
passionate about developing new software products, and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
Salary range: €37,750- €46,255 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).
Start date: Position is available from 1st October 2013.
