EcoDiscovery Center
Visitors can take a ride on the Everglades Airboat Adventure, experience hurricane force winds
in the Storm Center, dig for fossils alongside a giant prehistoric megalodon, get up close to a
confrontation between a saber-toothed cat and an Imperial mammoth, learn about protecting and
conserving the Everglades and Florida’s natural resources, and follow the natural path water
takes through Florida. Visitors can learn about Florida mammals while enjoying the playful
antics of North American river otters in their two-story indoor/outdoor habitat. The second floor
also features the Mangurian Foundation Lifelong Learning Center with four labs and the 100seat Keller Science Theater with comfortable seating and technical features to support lectures,
exciting science demonstrations, and presentations by community experts.
POWERFUL YOU! Presented by Broward Health
Powerful You! showcases the amazing miracle of your body and the tools used by health
professionals to keep you healthy. Powerful You! is comprised of four zones: Powerful Team,
Powerful Pulse, Powerful You and The Cutting Edge. Visitors use a robot to conduct surgery,
operate a simulated Cyberknife, drive a DUI simulator and learn all about the importance of the
“Golden Hour.”
GO GREEN! Sponsored by, Republic Services, Inc.
Ever wonder where your waste goes after the garbage truck takes it away? Harry the Heap, the
recycling robot, knows and is excited to show you the importance of recycling, safe waste
disposal, and the science behind landfills. Come explore with Harry as he guides visitors in
learning what “Going Green” really means. In Go Green! guests will discover how to recognize
the right materials for recycling, ways to reduce household waste and to be familiar with new
sources of clean energy.
AVIATION STATION
Take to the sky as you learn the science of flight in Aviation Station. The hands-on experience
begins by climbing into three different replica cockpit simulators. Visitors can practice their
piloting skills by test “flying” the Lockheed Martin F/35 Joint Strike fighter, the newest jet
fighter now being developed; the Edge 540, an aerobatic single engine aircraft used in the
worldwide Red Bull Air Race; and the Vought F4U Corsair, argued to be one of the finest
aircrafts of WWII. These interactive simulators will immerse visitors in aviation technology and
put them right in the pilot’s seat. Try your hand at the Interactive Radio Control Helicopter
Station as you test your skills and watch the helicopter lift off, hover, fly clockwise and counter
clockwise and ultimately land on the helipad. Ever see a real aircraft engine? Get up-close-andpersonal with the Pratt & Whitney 985 Bushwacker rotary engine and examine its detail. Next,
head over to the jet engine from an F/14 Tomcat Jet Fighter and study the cutaway illustration
that shows the internal workings of the engine. The permanent addition has been made possible
by a generous gift from The Emil Buehler Trust.
MaxFlight Full Motion Simulator
Aviation Station also adds the state-of-the-art MaxFlight full motion simulator. With 360 –
degree pitch, roll and spin technology, visitors will be able to experience adrenaline-filled aerial
races and stunt flying! Note: You must be at least 48” tall to ride the MaxFlight motion
simulator.
MINERALS ROCK! Building Blocks of the Universe
Learn more about minerals in this beautiful and colorful exhibit that displays over 60 different
types of minerals and rocks. Did you know minerals are the building blocks of the entire
universe? The iron in hematite, in spinach and in our blood’s hemoglobin is all the same --- just
like the calcium in sea shells, in milk and in our bones are all the same. Did you know some
rocks glow in the dark? See pyrite or fool’s gold, opal, copper, malachite, halite, quartz, azurite,
and sulfur, just to name a few! You will even be able to touch real lava and make a “volcano”
erupt to see how new rocks and land masses are formed! The specimens in this display were
provided by the Carol Jacobs Mineral and Ammonite Collection from the Broward College
Graves Museum Collection.

July 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 2014
The Museum of Discovery and Science invites the whole family to participate in an evening of
sea turtle discovery this summer. Once again, the annual evening Turtle Walks will occur in June
and July. Visitors will enjoy an entire evening of sea turtle exploration and identification while
uncovering the natural history and myths of turtles. Nature permitting, participants will have a
chance to watch a 300 pound Loggerhead sea turtle venture out of the ocean to lay her eggs. A
female loggerhead sea turtle may travel thousands of miles to return to the beach where she
hatched as a baby to lay her own eggs as an adult.
At 9:00 p.m., the adventure begins at the Museum of Discovery and Science with an informative
hands-on session about turtles (land, fresh water and salt water) with an expanded focus on sea
turtles. Guests will also meet the Museum’s Ambassador Loggerhead sea turtle who is almost
one year old. Once it reaches an appropriate size it will be released in the ocean. Museum staff
will provide answers to questions about nesting, threats and conservation before proceeding to
the beach.
The adventure continues to Fort Lauderdale beach where Museum expert guides lead guests to
the sea turtle’s nesting grounds to look for amazing sea turtles. We cannot guarantee a sea turtle
will be spotted on every walk but when it does happen it is a natural wonder that no one will ever
forget.
Guests should be prepared to walk approximately one to two miles, and provide their own
transportation and snacks. Participants must be 9 years of age or older. Advance reservations are
required as space is limited. Please call 954.713.0930 to make reservations. Prices are $18 for
