To synthesize intermediate a, phenothiazine (0.4 g, 2 mmol), ethyl bromide (0.33 g, 3 mmoL)

and NaH (0.07 g, 3 mmoL) were mixed in round-bottom flask. The mixture was stirred at 140 °C
for about 24 h. The solvent was evaporated to get intermediate a.
Then, intermediate a (0.12 g, 5 mmol), triphenylphosphine (10 mL) were dissolved in DMF (15
mL) in ice-water bath. Then, the mixture was stirred at 80 ºC for 1 h, cooled to room temperature,
poured into ice water (50 mL) and light-yellow solid was deposited. The soilid was extract with
ethyl acetate (150 mL  4). The organic layer was combined, washed with water and dried over
MgSO4. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was purified by column chromatograph of
silica gel with petroleum ether/ethyl acetate (3:1) as the eluent to obtain intermediate b as a yellow
solid in yield 64%.

A D-π-A type phenothiazine derivative (L) was synthesized and used to prepare nanohybrid
with Au NPs. L molecules coupled with Au NPs through S atoms, which brought about significant
blue-shift of the fluorescence and an obvious increase of FL lifetime.
