Matthew 24:34 and "This Generation" - John

A couple of years ago, I debated two atheists, Dan and Bill Courtney from the New
York State Free Thinkers. During the debate, we discussed the topic of Bible
prophecy. The atheists took the position that Matthew 24:34 was a false prophecy by
Jesus Christ because His generation passed away and the events prophesied did not
take place. This is a common argument by many who attack the authority of the
Bible. The Muslims often use this verse when I debate them.
Within Christianity, a doctrine called Preterism (means past) also believes that this
verse pertains to the generation of Jesus Christ. The Preterists believe that all
prophecy was fulfilled by 70 AD with the extreme view believing that Jesus Christ
returned in 70 AD. Because this verse is so often used to attack the authority of Bible
prophecy, it is very important to be grounded in the truth of this scripture.
There are two keys to understanding the prophecy of Jesus Christ's Second Coming
as revealed in Matthew 24, also known as the Olivet Discourse. The first is to
understand Matthew 24:3, while the second is that Mark and Luke also write about
this topic. The three Gospels together: Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21 are called
synoptic and need to be studied together for the complete picture and understanding.
Jesus Christ and His disciples were in Jerusalem at the temple. He warned them that
the temple was going to be destroyed. The disciples were upset upon hearing this
and asked three questions. The questions are found in Matthew 24:3, which becomes
very important because it is the basis for understanding Jesus Christ's words found in
Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21. These topics must be kept in mind when reading
the chapters to understand what question He was addressing. The three questions
are:
1. When shall these things be? (This is the coming destruction of the temple that was
currently standing.)
2. What shall be the sign of your (Second) coming?
3. The end of the world.
Matthew 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him
privately, saying, Tell us, (1) when shall these things be? and (2) what shall be the
sign of thy coming, and of (3) the end of the world?
With this in mind, let's look at Matthew 24:34 in the context which it was located. In
the preceding verses, the Lord was addressing question two which is the "sign of his
coming". This is found in verses 29-31.
Matthew 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven,
and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the
Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall
see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (31)
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather
together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
These verses are about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and the events
preceding His return. They are not about the coming destruction of the temple. Then
in the following verse, He gives a parable about the "fig tree" putting forth its leaves
you know the summer is near. The fig tree blooms very late in the spring, and when it
does summertime is very close. The fig tree becomes a timepiece or calendar for an
event.
Matthew 24:32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender,
and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
The use of the word "fig tree" is very significant because in the Bible it can represent
the nation of Israel. God uses this metaphor and others like it because the nation is
supposed to bear spiritual fruit for Him. This is a very important parable as it is found
in three gospel accounts: here in Matthew as well as Mark 13:28 and Luke 21:29.
The fig tree represents Israel. The foundation of the fig tree representing Israel is
found in the Old Testament:
Hosea 9:10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the first
ripe in the fig tree at her first time ...
When studying the gospels, there are many times that the Lord uses a parable about
the fig tree. They are usually about bearing fruit, which Israel was not, and the
subsequent destruction of the tree for being fruitless. In Matthew 24:32, Jesus Christ
is talking about the fig tree coming to life and getting ready to bear fruit and not its
destruction. The context of Matthew 24:34 is the generation that sees the events
coming to pass regarding the end of the age and the Second Coming of the Lord
Jesus. THIS generation shall not pass until all the events are fulfilled. Let's look at the
entire section in context to see that the generation in focus is the one that is living
during the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and it is not the generation that sees the
destruction of the temple. These are two separate events.
Matthew 24:29,30 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be
darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven,
and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the
Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall
see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
(31) And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall
gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
(32) Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth
forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: (33) So likewise ye, when ye shall see all
these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. (34) Verily I say unto you, This
generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
Luke 21 gives a tremendous key to understanding the setting of the generation
mentioned in Matthew 24:34. Luke establishes the connection with the destruction of
Jerusalem (Question One) and then restoration of the city (Question Two). So,
events involving Jerusalem become the setting for the final generation. In verses 20
and 21, Luke writes about the destruction of the city and what to look for. This is
describing when Jerusalem is about to be destroyed. Jerusalem eventually was
destroyed in 70 AD by the Roman army, thus fulfilling the warning of Jesus Christ.
This answers the first question: "When shall these things be"?
Luke 21:20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know
that the desolation thereof is nigh. (21) Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the
mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that
are in the countries enter thereinto.
Luke then goes on to say that the destruction of Jerusalem and the captivity of the
Jewish people would not last forever. That Jerusalem would be under the control of
the non Jews for only a certain period of time. Jesus Christ referred to this as the
"times of the Gentiles". The exact length of time was not mentioned, but the
conclusion would be known as prophetic events would focus on Jerusalem.
Luke 21:24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away
captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the
times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.
The prophet Zechariah also wrote, that just prior to the Second Coming of Jesus
Christ, Jerusalem would again be the capital of a Jewish state, and the city would be
the focus of world attention and massive world wars. The wars would end in the
Battle of Armageddon and the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Christ then returns to
Jerusalem and this ends the "times of the Gentiles".
Zechariah 12:6 In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire
among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the
people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be
inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ comes at the end of the non Jewish control of
Jerusalem. So, according to the synoptic Gospels regarding the Olivet Discourse, we
could be the generation that will not pass away until all things be fulfilled. Just prior to
the return of Jesus Christ, the world will be in an upheaval. The sun and moon will
show signs that perplex people. On earth, nature will be convulsing with worldwide
massive earthquakes and the oceans roaring. The events are so frightening that
men's hearts will fail seeing what is happening. Events like these have never
happened before but will just prior to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. These
events are warnings to the world of Christ's return.
Luke 21:25,26 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars;
and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming
on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
(27) And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great
glory.
Today, after 1900 years, the Jews are once again back on the land and Israel is a
nation. As prophesied by Jesus Christ and the prophets, Jerusalem is once again the
capital of a Jewish nation. Hebrew was a dead language, but it was revived and is the
national language of Israel. The Israelis even have shekels for money! The fig tree is
once again ready to bloom, so we know that "the summer is nigh" or Second Coming
of Jesus Christ is near. This is the generation that was mentioned in Matthew 24:34.
This is the generation that shall see the end of the age and the Second Coming of
Jesus Christ.
Luke 21:32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be
fulfilled.
The Lord then went on to say we should watch for we never know when these events
might start taking place.
Matthew 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
The watching was not limited to the generation of Jesus Christ but every generation
until He returns.
This is a sign that someone is a real Christian, when he is living with the Blessed
Hope: looking for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them
that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
1Thessalonians 1:10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the
dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
Titus 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God
and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

It's probably no coincidence as we approach the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah that
archaeologists have uncovered a remnant of a remarkable time in Israel's history.
About a hundred years before Christ, a Jewish rebellion against the Greek ruler
Antiochus Epiphanes produced some of the most amazing leaders in Israel's history.
The Maccabees, a family originating from Modi'in (near present-day Tel Aviv), rallied
an army that defeated Antiochus. Thus the Jews were sovereign in their land until the
Romans emerged decades later.
Just one - one of hundreds - remarkable thing about visiting Israel is seeing ancient
history swirl around the present day and even the future. A couple examples come to
mind: Israel's governing body, the Knesset, is made up of 120 members. Why that
number? Because the Jewish leadership council during the Babylonian exile 2,600
years ago numbered 120.
Also, no matter where new construction starts, great care is given to making sure an
archaeological treasure is not harmed. A few years ago I was strolling down a street
in Jaffa and noticed the street was torn up. Thinking it was some paving problem, I
asked someone. "Oh, no," came the reply. "They've uncovered some ancient site."
I know other countries have archaeological sites, but certainly Israel is unique in this
regard.
Hearing of this week's announcement of a fortress used by Antiochus reminded me
of the sublime times I've walked around Jerusalem's Old City. There are still places
just outside the city's walls where one can imagine some amazing treasure just
waiting to be uncovered.
No one knows where the tombs of David and Solomon are, but significant sites have
been uncovered on the southern end. David's palace sits atop an ancient community
that slopes downhill, overlooking the modern Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan.
One can imagine David here, looking down on a beautiful young woman bathing on
her roof.
According to the Times of Israel:
"A section of fortification was discovered under the Givati parking lot in the City of
David south of the Old City walls and the Temple Mount. The fortification is believed
to have been part of a system of defenses known as the Acra fortress, built by
Antiochus as he sought to quell a Jewish priestly rebellion centered on the Temple.
"Antiochus is remembered in the Jewish tradition as the villain of the Hanukkah
holiday who sought to ban Jewish religious rites, sparking the Maccabean revolt."
It is absolutely incredible that in our day scores of people around the world seek to
erase Jewish history from the Holy Land. Some in the religious community even refer
to it almost exclusively as "the Holy Land" so that they don't have to say "Israel."
And yet we continually see evidence of Jewish history uncovered in their ancient
homeland.
I love that this new site is being opened to the public on the evening of December 6,
the beginning of Hanukkah this year.
May the memory of the Maccabees be remembered in all their glory. And may their
memory inspire today's generation of Israelis, who are facing their own Antiochus.

Russian military surge in Syria: More helicopters, first

After the downing of the Russian airliner over Sinai on Oct. 31, Moscow moved into
positon to lead the offensive against the Islamic State in Syria. The Russian air force
transferred a large number of assault helicopters out of its enclave in Latakia
province over to two Syrian air bases east of Homs on the front lines against ISIS,
debkafile's military sources report. From the T4 (Tiyas) and Shayrat Airbases, the
Russian command will lead the battle against the Islamic State over Homs, a city of
one million inhabitants and the hub of central-eastern Syria. As the Russians move
over from air strikes to the offensive against ISIS, they know their combat helicopters
are now exposed to being shot down.
Homs came under direct threat on Nov. 1, when Islamic State forces captured the
village of Mahin south of the city, cutting down the Iranian Revolutionary Guards,
Syrian army and Hezbollah forces standing in their path and inflicting heavy
casualties. Control of Mahin opened the way for ISIS and Syrian rebels to reach the
southern suburbs of Homs and seize control of the strategic M5 Highway linking the
city to Damascus.
Another group of Russian combat helicopters is now deployed at Hama Military
Airport to block off the offensive ISIS and the Nusra Front are preparing to launch in
the northern Idlib Province. There too jihadist forces have made advances. On Nov.
5, they snatched from the Syrian army the strategic town of Morek which commands
the routes from the north to central Syria.
According to intelligence reports from southern Russia and the Crimean Peninsula,
more Russian combat helicopter units are under orders to stand ready for transfer to
Syria. Moscow is evidently preparing to take over from the Iranians, the Syrians and
Hezbollah the heavy-lifting of the war to stop further ISIS advances. More helicopters
are needed to support this offensive if it is to go forward on all fronts.
Other intelligence sources report Russian "volunteer" units getting organized for
departure to Syria from southern Russia and eastern Ukraine, detached from fighting
alongside pro-Moscow separatists.
Their arrival in Syria would deepen Russia's military intervention in the Syrian conflict
and also mark its first participation in ground combat, contradicting President Vladimir
Putin's earlier pledge against putting Russian boots on the ground in Syria.
While intensifying the war on ISIS, the Kremlin is also pushing forward its plan for a
political solution of the Syrian crisis, to be discussed at the forthcoming multinational
conference in Vienna.
Tuesday, Nov. 10, a number of Western media claimed to "reveal" some of its key
points, although the full seven-point blueprint was first published by DEBKA Weekly
684 on Oct. 30, under the heading:
Revealed: Russia's Syrian Peace Plan
1. Russia and Washington will draw up an agreed "target list" of parties standing out
against a political resolution of the conflict. They are to be attacked jointly by US and
allies and Russian forces. The proposal does not go into the nature of a bilateral
mechanism for determining who figures on the "target list."
Moscow would really prefer the Russian and the US-led coalition air forces not to
confine their attacks to ISIS, but extend them also to Syrian rebel groups. Russia
could then refute US and NATO allegations that only one out of every nine Russian
air strikes is directed against an ISIS target, with the majority aimed at Syrian rebel
groups.
As DEBKA Weekly reported in its previous issue, the Obama administration did not
reject a priori the proposed US-Russian air force collaboration in Syria and Iraq, but
requested additional clarifications from Moscow.
2. Moscow proposes an immediate cease-fire on all Syrian army-rebel warfronts. The
proposal does not say if it should apply to the foreign forces fighting in the country,
such as the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hezbollah, the pro-Iranian militias
and the Russians themselves.
3. Once the cease-fire goes into effect, all the parties and organizations involved in
the war will be convened for a national dialogue. This round-table conference will
have three main goals:
A. Release of all prisoners and hostages held by the various sides.
B. Preparation of parliamentary and presidential elections with a general amnesty for
political prisoners.
C. Establishment of a new government committed to implementing agreed
constitutional reforms that center on the transfer of presidential powers from Assad to
the designated prime minister.
In other words, Assad will not be made to step down as president at once, but will
have to give up his presidential powers, including control of the military and
intelligence services.
It is assumed that Putin put this clause before the Syrian ruler in Moscow as a diktat
he had no choice but to accept.
4. The Russian president offers a personal guarantee that Assad will not be permitted
to run for president in the coming elections, but he has accepted the Syrian ruler's
proviso that members of his family and ruling caste will be eligible for election.
5. All the rebel groups and militias that take part in implementing the Russian plan will
be absorbed into Syria's military or other security services and place themselves
under their orders.
6. Governments and other bodies outside Syria will undertake to halt weapons
supplies to all combatant forces. This provision applies not only to the US and Saudi
Arabia with regard to rebel groups, but also to Russia and Iran as sponsors of the
Syrian army.
7. Russia will continue to maintain military force in Syria as security for the
agreement's full implementation, contingent on UN Security Council endorsement of
its presence.

The Fate of Damascus and the Psalm 83 War
About the time of the end the biblical prophet Ezekiel tells of a future invasion of
Israel by a vast coalition of nations, known as the battle of Gog and Magog, we find
this in Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39. As we read the headlines in the newspapers of
today, and witness the conflicts in the Middle East, it's not hard to imagine that this
invasion prophesied over 2600 years ago, could be fulfilled in the immediate
future. Ezekiel 36-37 predicts a gathering of the Jews to the nation of Israel, which
will be followed by this massive invasion. For 19 centuries, the Jewish people were
scattered throughout the world, and until May 14, 1948, there was no nation of Israel
to invade. With the nation of Israel now a reality, the stage seems set for the war that
will usher in the tribulation and the rise of the Antichrist; a war that will end with the
destruction of Israel's enemies by God Himself, and lead to the signing of a peace
treaty with the Antichrist.
As you read Ezekiel 38 and 39, it isn't just the creation of the nation of Israel that
makes this prophecy seem likely to be fulfilled in the near future. The nations that
God tells us will form this coalition against Israel seem more likely now than perhaps
ever before to form just such an alliance." The leaders of this coalition will be Russia
and Iran, and currently both of these nations are right on Israel's doorstep, under the
pretense of battling ISIS in Syria. I believe that there are a couple of unfulfilled
prophecies that will lead-up to this massive invasion of Israel, and as we read today's
headlines, we find that the fulfillment of these two prophesied events, could happen
very soon!

During this soul-trying, end-times darkness, trepidation crushes in from every side,
quenching the remaining, lingering rays of hope. This is the picture troubling issues
and events force us to commit to the electronic page each week in these
commentaries. But there is about to burst forth a dazzling spectacle of a future world
brilliant beyond all imagination. It is this spectacular prospect I wish to present before
you in this week's commentary.
You and I, of all generations of all of human history, are here at this moment in time-put here by the Creator of all that is. No other people of any previous generation have
been so near to attaining the things the God of Heaven has prepared for those who
love Him. Those who have chosen to accept God's offer to be part of His family have
at the forefront of their spiritual understanding, a spectacular panorama of what is to
come.
We get this truth from the words of the apostle Paul:
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the
heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God
hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the
deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of
man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of
God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God;
that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (1 Corinthians 2: 912)
God's love letter to mankind--the Bible--makes it clear that this world system will
come to an end and a new era will begin in which planet earth will be restored to a
perfect geophysical environment like that of the Garden of Eden. All hunger will be
replaced by abundance far beyond any known since Eden was in full bloom. Human
government, with its murderous, tyrannical, self-serving rulers, will be forever done
away with, replaced by the absolute perfect reign of King Jesus.
All citizens of the millennial kingdom will prosper in every way. Although sin will still
exist, Christ's perfect rule with a "rod of iron" will assure that all sin will be kept
beneath the surface of the society and culture of that marvelous era. Crime will be
instantly dealt with, as nothing can be hidden from His Majesty's omnipotent law
enforcement. Who knows? If you are a child of God now, in this pre-Tribulation
dispensation, you might be one of the King's millennial, perfect law enforcement
agents during Christ's one-thousand-year reign.
All of God's children who have lived and died during this Church Age or Age of Grace
will, at the moment Christ calls "Come up here," be instantly changed into immortal
beings --supernatural citizens of God's Kingdom. As Christ's Bride, Church Age
saints will Reign with the Lord, judging even the angels of Heaven. Having the
perfect, sinless mind of Christ, each of His beloved family members will bless the
millennial earth with contributions commensurate with the heavenly administration
rewards received at the Judgment Seat of Christ.
Each raptured saint will be fellow possessor of all of God the Father's heavenly
riches. When you accept Christ while in this present dispensation, you become joint
heirs with the Lord Jesus Christ. All of God's treasury will then be yours when you
find yourself in the presence of the Lord Jesus at the moment of Rapture.
That instantaneous movement into the heavenlies at the time of death or Rapture is
without even a microsecond of hesitation. I can testify to that Truth whether I am
believed or not by those who I no doubt keep boring with my own Good Friday
experience of April 22, 2011. Regardless of that risk, I cannot help but proclaim yet
again that, as Paul the apostle said: "To be absent from the body is to be present
with the Lord!"
The instant my heart was stopped three separate times by a "widow-maker" heart
attack on three occasions that day and the doctors declared me dead on arrival, I
was instantaneously staring at the cloud of witnesses of Hebrews 12: 1-3. I didn't see
Jesus, but then, again, I wasn't kept in that eternal realm, but was sent back to, for
one thing, write today's column!
I've been shown in my spirit that they were cheering the very things we are
considering in this commentary in thinking on the promises of God's prophetic Word
regarding Christ's any-moment call to His Bride, the Church, and the glorious postRapture things to come.
I am of the strongest conviction that all believers are about to instantaneously find
ourselves looking directly into the soul-piercing gaze of the Creator of all things --into
the eyes of Jesus, Himself. Everything points to the certainty that this Age of Grace is
on the cusp of completion. The very next event that is prophetically scheduled is,
from what I believe the Bible foretells, the change from mortal to immortality--the
Rapture.
What a glorious prospect! As our Lord escorts Heaven's newest citizens into the
Father's house, the effulgence of the glimmering, shimmering spectrum of colors,
sights, and sounds never seen or heard this side of eternity will drench our
supernaturally enhanced senses while we proceed. This is not pie in the sky, as
mockers often taunt in scoffing at those who have faith that God's Word presents the
Pre-Trib Rapture view of prophecy. This is really about to occur! The ultimate
fulfillment of prophetic promise for believers in Jesus Christ, securing their future life
that will never end, rather will only increase in pleasure and power beyond the ability
to fathom, is at hand.
We too easily forget Jesus' promise to come for us and take us to His Father's
House:
Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's
house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a
place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive
you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14: 1-3)
While we involve ourselves in the daily pursuits of life, thinking on jobs, our children,
our friends and social obligations and functions, our pleasures and our problems, we
must, as believers in our Lord's Promises, look around us at the prophetic signs and
discern these strange times. We must understand that Jesus could at any moment
stand from his seat at His Father's right hand and come to gather and take all of
those who are but strangers upon this fallen planet into the Father's house--into
Heaven.
All the signals point to our going Home!
Violent Shaking along the Ring Of Fire Continues a
Progression of Disasters That Began In September - By

Have you noticed that seismic activity along the Ring of Fire appears to be
dramatically increasing? According to Volcano Discovery, 39 volcanoes around the
world have recently erupted, and 32 of them are associated with the Ring of
Fire. This includes Mt. Popocatepetl which sits only about 50 miles away from
Mexico City's 18 million inhabitants. If you are not familiar with the Ring of Fire, it is
an area roughly shaped like a horseshoe that runs along the outer perimeter of the
Pacific Ocean. Approximately 90 percent of all earthquakes and approximately 75
percent of all volcanic eruptions occur along the Ring of Fire. Just within the last 24
hours, we have witnessed a 4.4, a 5.4 and a 5.7 earthquake in Alaska, a 6.8
earthquake in Chile and 20 earthquakes in Indonesia of at least magnitude 4.3. And
as you will see below, this violent shaking along the Ring of Fire seems to continue a
progression of major disasters that began back during the month of September.
For whatever reason, our planet suddenly seems to be waking up. Unfortunately, the
west coast of the United States is one of the areas where this is being felt the
most. The little city of San Ramon, California is about 45 miles east of San
Francisco, and over the past several weeks it has experienced a record-breaking 583
earthquakes...
A total of 583 small earthquakes have shaken San Ramon, California, in the last
three weeks or so - more than five times the record set 12 years ago, according to
the latest US Geological Survey updates.
"It's the swarm with the largest number of total earthquakes in San Ramon," said
USGS scientist David Schwartz, who is more concerned about the size of quakes
than he is the total number of them. Still, the number tops the previous record set in
2003, when 120 earthquakes hit over 31 days, with the largest clocking in at a
magnitude of 4.2.
Could this be a prelude to a major seismic event in California?
We shall see what happens.
Meanwhile, records are being shattered in the middle part of the country as well.
For instance, the state of Oklahoma has already set a brand new yearly record for
earthquakes...
The state recorded its 587th earthquake of 3.0 magnitude or higher early this week,
breaking the previous record of 585. That record was set for all of 2014, meaning that
Oklahoma has now had more 3.0 magnitude or higher earthquakes so far in 2015
than it did in all of 2014. So far this year, E&E News reports, Oklahoma's averaged
2.5 quakes each day, a rate that, if it continues, means the state could see more than
912 earthquakes by the end of this year.
Oklahoma has also experienced 21 4.0 magnitude or greater earthquakes so far this
year - an increase over last year, which saw 14.
And just over this past weekend there was a very disturbing series of earthquakes in
the state...
Starting with a magnitude-4.1 temblor at 5:11 a.m. close to the Oklahoma-Kansas
border, the region experienced a series of six earthquakes within a 75-minute period
Saturday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on its website.
The largest earthquake Saturday morning was the 4.1, which had an epicenter nine
miles northwest of Medford, Okla., 59 miles southwest of Wichita.
That was followed by five more quakes near Medford with magnitudes of 2.5, 2.8,
2.5, 3.1 and 2.9 - the last of which came at 6:24 a.m.
A seventh earthquake - this one a magnitude-4.2 temblor - was recorded at 12:29
p.m., 10 miles north-northwest of Medford.
So why aren't more Americans alarmed that these records are being broken?
We are seeing things that we have never seen before, and I believe that it will soon
get even worse.
And this dramatic increase in seismic activity that we are now seeing appears to fit
into a larger pattern of major disasters that we have been witnessing over the past
couple of months.
As we approached the end of the summer, all of a sudden massive wildfires erupted
all across the western third of the country. According to the National Interagency Fire
Center, the only time in U.S. history when wildfires had burned more acres by the end
of October was during the record-setting year of 2006.
In 2015, a lot of these wildfires have really been threatening highly populated areas. I
know, because at one point a major fire came within about 10 miles of my own
house. Since the beginning of August, Barack Obama has made an astounding 25
disaster declarations related to fires, and by the end of September the horrible fires
that were threatening key areas of the state of California were making headlines all
over the world.
Then as we got to the very end of the month of September, a new kind of disaster
began to take center stage. As I wrote about just recently, the storm that would later
became known as Hurricane Joaquin developed into a tropical depression on
September 28th.
Even though that hurricane never made landfall in the United States, moisture from
that storm caused a tremendous amount of chaos along the east coast.
The governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, said that it was the most rain that some
areas of her state had witnessed "in a thousand years", and it is being projected that
the economic damage that was done by all of the flooding "will probably be in the
billions of dollars".
Shortly after the flooding in South Carolina, a massive storm dumped an enormous
amount of rain on southern California. Because that area had been experiencing
severe drought for so long, all of that rain caused tremendous flooding and massive
mudslides. Rivers of mud literally several feet thick completely stopped traffic along
many major roads across the region. If you got caught in those rivers of mud, you
were lucky to get out with your life. In fact, authorities pulled one dead man out of a
vehicle that got completely buried by mud several days after the storms had
passed. It took them that long to finally get to him.
The middle of the country was not spared either. Hurricane Patricia ended up being
one of the strongest hurricanes ever measured, and the remnants of that storm
dumped an incredible amount of rain on the state of Texas. There was so much
flooding that a train was literally knocked off the tracks by the water. And about a
week after that there was more flooding in the state that caused at least six deaths.
Overall, it has really been a bad couple of months for major disasters, and this
sequence of events seems to have begun during the month of September.

As we commemorate Veterans Day, I am always humbled by the selfless and heroic
efforts made by those brave men and women, the sons and daughters of America
who preserved liberty at the highest cost, no short cuts, but the ultimate price. I think
of that fantastic generation of World War II and those that followed in Korea, Vietnam
and, now, the Middle East. They sacrificed their lives for something they believed was
bigger than them. They knew the value of family; the power of God; and that what
was good about life and liberty was foundational to being an American, and it was
worth fighting for. They were defined by their courage and character, their dedication
to what was right and good.
Veterans Day this day is a solemn day in our household. Growing up, the price of
liberty was always close to home and family as many in our community stood when
called and said "Here am I." We in America are crying out for common sense, a sign
that we can find unity, and peace. We have been at war with Islam for 15 years. It is
too long. Our veterans pay the price of death, mental health, loss of limbs, and loss of
family. There is absolutely no resolve on the part of politicians to do the right thing-fight this war with a decisive and victorious end, and get it done. But considering the
response by the Administration and the weak-kneed politicians of both parties, there
is little hope of resolution outside of God's hand of mercy.
Warren McCarthy and Gene Flynn, served on D-Day, surviving the beaches of
Normandy. They were decorated war heroes. Not much of what they did was ever
discussed. But you somehow knew that they were special. My dad, who was a farmer
during WWII, was best friends with these men. He knew what went on, but would
never say. They were among the finest men I knew growing up. My uncle Bob Harris
served in the Philippines. There were times when he had flashbacks. My dad would
get a call from my aunt and he would find Uncle Bob, talk him down and hold him
until the terror passed. He, too, was a decorated hero. All these men knew the price
of freedom and they understood their civic duty to their families, their God and their
country.
Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton all openly paid respect to America's
servicemen and women on Veteran Days. Former President George W. Bush
honored and respected our servicemen every day of his two terms. For example, he
gave up the game of golf early in his presidency out of respect for the families of
those who gave their lives for our nation. The current "president," however, shows no
such respect. He has golfed 248 times during his presidency, and has played golf on
every Memorial Day weekend since taking office. Think about the optics and how this
Administration has treated veterans. Jesus said in Matthew 7:20, "Wherefore by their
fruits ye shall know them." Enough said.

When Mary poured a flask of costly, fragrant oil on Jesus, not everyone appreciated
her sacrifice and generosity. Matthew tells us, "But when His disciples saw it, they
were indignant, saying, 'Why this waste? For this fragrant oil might have been sold for
much and given to the poor' " (26:8-9).
In a way, you can almost see their beef. The perfume was worth about $35,000. We
may think, Is that good stewardship? Was that really a good idea? But John's Gospel
gives us a significant detail that provides us with important insight into who led this
little revolt:
But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who would betray Him, said,
"Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?"
This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the
money box; and he used to take what was put in it. (John 12:4-6)
Judas was in charge of the money. His motive was not a concern for the poor; it was
a concern for money leaving his pocket. Ironically, the name Judas means "the son of
waste." (What kind of name is that to give to a child?) Here was a man whose name
meant "the son of waste" accusing Mary of waste.
This is typical of hypercritical people. I have found that those who are so quick to find
fault with others, often challenging their motives, usually are guilty of something far
worse. They project their sins on the people they accuse, when, in reality, they are
the ones with the problem.
I have also found that these people tend to do very little, and those who complain the
least typically are the ones who do the most.
