Job Description
Job Title: Oak Hill Heritage Project Archivist (Heritage Lottery Project)
Hours of work: 35 hours per week –fixed term contract 4 months.
Pay: £24,000 per annum
Reports to: Head of Development Unit
Annual leave: 25 days plus public holidays (Pro-rata)
Pension: Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
Line Manages: In conjunction with the Head of Development- Volunteers
Close liaison with: The Head of Development Unit, The Heritage Lottery
Project (HLF) manager, HLF partners, SMT & Heads of Department.
Working at Hillcroft and the Oak Hill Heritage Project
Hillcroft College is a unique residential learning environment. Students
enjoy learning and developing in this type of environment as it enables
them to achieve and succeed, without life’s distractions. Our mission is to
provide courses and developmental opportunities for women who have
not been able to access educational opportunities for a variety of socioeconomic reasons.
Hillcroft has a long and established history of women’s education dating
back 93 years, along with its building, which was built in the 1800’s for
Bryant and May and forms part of the English Heritage tour which takes
place in the borough annually. Hillcroft, the women’s educational charity
and national residential college for women in partnership, with the Royal
Borough of Kingston (Local Authority), NHS Kingston, South West London
Health Partnerships, the Central GP Surgery, your healthcare and Lime
Tree Primary School are in receipt of funding from the Heritage Lottery
Fund to collect, collate and archive the rich history of Oakhill,
Surbiton(Oak Hill Heritage Project).
Project Outcomes







An online catalogue of the Oak Hill archive, compiled according to
ISAD (G) standards
A digital collection of the Oak Hill Archive.
Organisation and preservation of the original archival content to
ensure future availability.
A website dedicated to the Oak Hill Heritage Project which provides
access to the archive catalogue and digitised archival material
A permanent timeline, displaying the history of the Oak Hill area, in
the grounds of the new Health Centre in Surbiton.
Displays utilising material from the archive at various locations in
Kingston Borough
A seminar/workshop on the history of Oak Hill.
Job Purpose
As the Project Archivist for the Oak Hill Heritage project, you will be
responsible for researching and managing this Archive on behalf of the
Oak Hill partnership ensuring that the archives are catalogued and made
accessible to the public in line with current professional archival standards
and best practice guidelines. This post has been generously funded by the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
Principal responsibilities

To assess the Oak Hill collection and catalogue to ISAD(G)
standards

To identify missing sections from the Oak Hill archives, develop and
enact strategies to retrieve, collate and catalogue the same

To work with Kingston University to devise an oral history project to
collect local oral histories relating to the Oak Hill area; and to
catalogue and incorporate the outputs into the main catalogue

To work with the Partners to recruit, train and direct team of
volunteers to collect the oral histories and support the project

To ensure and maintain collections storage to BS5454 standard with

Royal
Borough
of
Kingston
archives
department

Manage the conservation and preservation of the archive for hand
over at the end of the project

To work with the designers of the timeline, and the web developer
to ensure that the collection is accessible and downloadable online

To advise on archive displays to exhibit for view in the college

Advise users how to best access, use and interpret the archive

Assist the Project Steering Group, with regards to any queries about
the collection

To advise on records and information management issues
concerning the collection

To advise and administer copyright and intellectual property rights
concerning the collection

Work with the project steering group on the promotion of the
archive on behalf of the Oak Hill project

Research and participate in the creation of source and publicity
material for the archive

Conduct a variety of outreach activities about the archive and liaise
with the Partners regarding the educational use of the collection

Liaise with other bodies holding material related to the Oak Hill
history, e.g. The Women’s library, Kingston archives, Hillcroft
archives, NHS, Kingston museum, Kingston University and others

To present the project and the archive to local and professional
bodies

To undertake such other duties and responsibilities as may
reasonably be required from time to time within the purview of the
post
General

To work proactively with colleagues across the College and the HLF
project group


Under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, whilst at work you

Undertake duties in accordance with the College regulations,
