Schnoll 1 Brian Schnoll Dion Com 100 Speech Outline – Importance of Politics in Daily Life Introduction: Good morning. My name is Brian Schnoll. By a show of hands, how many of you believe that politics influence our lives absolutely? Good. Politics affect our lives indefinitely because being a citizen of this country and functioning part of society, we are given freedoms and rights and rules that we must abide by. Everything we do is due to the structure of our country’s government and politics drive these necessities. I. NEXT SLIDE > Today, I will be speaking about the Importance of Politics in our Daily lives. a. I will first talk about our lawful place in society, and how we are bound to political properties. b. Then, I will speak about our Civil Liberties & Civil Rights. c. And I will close a discussion on Freedom. [NEXT SLIDE > Transition: According to USHistory.org, “Protection of civil liberties and civil rights is perhaps the most fundamental political value in American society”] II. NEXT SLIDE > let’s look at Section I of our 14th amendment. It states that: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” (UsHistory.org) a. As a citizen we are bound to our Constitution, and luckily, our country values civil liberties and rights. III. Politics govern our Civil liberties. Schnoll 2 a. NEXT SLIDE > Civil Liberties are defined as: the freedom of a citizen to exercise customary rights, as of speech or assembly, without unwarranted or arbitrary interference by the government. Such a right as guaranteed by the laws of a country, as in the U.S. by the Bill of Rights. i. Right to Privacy ii. Freedom of Religion iii. Right to Bear Arms iv. Right to Vote v. Right to travel freely vi. Right to Marry b. This states that our liberties are protected and governed by the laws of our country. (Dictionary.com) [NEXT SLIDE > this brings me to my next point] IV. According to PeoplePowerPress.org, Civil and political rights are a class of rights that protect individuals' freedom from infringement by governments, social organizations, and private individuals, and which ensure one's ability to participate in the civil and political life of the society and state without discrimination or repression. V. Politics allows our country to run efficiently and is the driving force behind our American lifestyle. a. Without politics, we wouldn’t have the freedoms we enjoy today. VI. NEXT SLIDE > let’s brainstorm here: Can someone tell me what freedom is to them? a. Freedom is, and we all can agree, the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. b. We value this, and the preservation of our freedom lies in the decision making processes of our governing leaders, hence, politics. Politics, the driving force of our free nation, influences our lives as citizens in absolute. We should care about politics because it constitutes our rights and liberties.
