Training Description: The Cultural Elements in Treating Hispanic and Latino Populations training curriculum was developed by the National Hispanic and Latino ATTC to address the need for cultural and science-based information among providers serving Hispanic and Latino populations. This training curriculum was originally a monograph of the same name authored by Dr. William A. Vega, a Behavioral Scientist whose work has been featured in the New England Journal of Medicine and Archives of General Psychiatry, and who has published over numerous articles and whose research has been sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. This curriculum is organized into modules which can be modified according to the target audience. It contains information that is helpful for professionals that serve Hispanic and Latino communities. It provides tools for those seeking to prepare their workforce in the cultural competence area. The training provides the opportunity to have professionals attend events aimed at increasing skill sets and acquiring information relevant to responding in culturally competent manners. Learning Objectives: At the end of the two-day training, participants will be able to: 1. Define the characteristics and demographics of the Hispanic and Latino population. 2. Explain at least three barriers to treatment and culture-related issues for Hispanics and Latinos seeking substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. 3. Describe how to apply cultural elements as they relate to treatment and implications in working with Hispanics and Latinos.
