Dr. Procaccino was born and raised in Westchester, New York. He graduated Summa Cum
Laude from Manhattan College with a B.S. in Biology and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He
went on to receive his Doctorate in Medicine from New York Medical College in Valhalla and
was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in 1984. Dr. Procaccino relocated to Long Island in 1984
when he began his Internship in General Surgery at North Shore University Hospital. He
completed his five-year training in General Surgery at North Shore after finishing his Chief
Resident year in June 1989.
A leader in the treatment of colon and rectal disease, Dr. John Procaccino provides superior
healthcare services to his patients. He has been the Director of North Shore University Hospital’s
Center for Colon and Rectal Diseases since its inception ten years ago. Dr. Procaccino brings his
distinguished 25-year track record of success in the field to this Center in order to fill any
significant void in the healthcare resources available on Long Island.
Dr. Procaccino has deep roots in the Long Island community and invested much of his
specialized knowledge in elevating the standard of colon and rectal disease treatment in the area.
Since 1990, he has been a staff surgeon at Long Island Jewish/Hillside Medical Center, St.
Francis Hospital, and North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. In 1998, he was asked to
assume the role of Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at North Shore University Hospital in
Manhasset. This was a particularly meaningful appointment for Dr. Procaccino as he completed
his entire residency at North Shore University Hospital and was thrilled to return “home” to such
a prominent position. In March 2001, Dr. Procaccino left private practice to assume his current
position as a full time faculty member on the staff at North Shore University Hospital and Long
Island Jewish Hospital. In this capacity, he was charged with the task of forming a Division of
Colon and Rectal Surgery for the North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish
Hospital Department of Surgery, and soon took on the coveted position of Chief of this Division.
Dr. Procaccino’s administrative responsibilities at North Shore University Hospital have recently
expanded as he has been named a Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
Dr. Procaccino was initially doubly boarded in General in 1990 and in Colorectal Surgery in
1992. He was recertified in General Surgery in 1999 and again in 2009; recertified in Colon and
Rectal Surgery in 2000 and again in 2011. He became a fully certified surgeon immediately
following his tenure as a Special Fellow and Administrative Chief Resident in the Department of
Colorectal Surgery at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. There, Dr.
Procaccino trained under Dr. Victor Fazio, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s top
practitioners in the field of colorectal surgery. A sought-after expert in his medical specialty, Dr.
Procaccino has been called upon by a host of academic institutions to provide instruction and
lectures. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Hofstra North Shore/LIJ School of
Medicine. Moreover, he is widely published in a variety of medical journals, and has presented
findings to numerous preeminent associations, including the American Association for Cancer
Research, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and the American College of
Surgeons. In fact, Dr. Procaccino had the distinct honor of being asked to write the chapter about
ulcerative colitis in the 5th and 9th editions of Current Surgical Therapy, which is commonly
referred to as the “bible” for doctors-to-be who are preparing for their board certification
examinations.
Dr. Procaccino lives on Long Island with his wife and three children. He is affiliated with more
than a dozen renowned professional societies and has received numerous awards and honor
society appointments in recognition of his success, including being elected by his peers for
inclusion in Best Doctors in America from 1996 to 2011, and named to NY Metro Top Doctors
by Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd. In addition, Dr. Procaccino was named to Strathmore’s Who’s
Who in 2000 to 2011. In 2011 Dr. Procaccino was named to Castle Connelly’s list of Best
Doctors in New York which is published annually in New York Magazine. Inclusion is limited to
individuals who have demonstrated leadership and achievement in their occupation, industry, or
profession.
Perhaps Dr. Procaccino’s most significant contribution to the field of Colon and Rectal Surgery
is his training of the next generation of surgeons. Since 2003 Dr. Procaccino has been the
Director of the North Shore/LIJ Fellowship Program in Colon and Rectal Surgery which is
accredited by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Dr. Procaccino and his
associates have recently matched their ninth Fellow candidate. All of the Fellows who have
trained in the North Shore/LIJ Fellowship Program have gone on to become Board Certified in
Colon and Rectal Surgery. These individuals are now providing the most innovative and cuttingedge therapies for their patients with colon and rectal disorders.
Dr. Procaccino’s clinical interests include Colon & Rectal Cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease
(Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis) and Diverticulitis. He performs both laparoscopic and open
surgery.
