Candidate Requirements

Summary of Qualifications Successful candidates will meet eligibility requirements along with the following personal work characteristics; flexibility and energy, ability to multi-task, organize and resolve conflicts. Candidates must be a team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired Education: High School Diploma and enrolled into TCC prior to start date

Relevant Experience: Administrative Assistant

Work outside of normal operation hours: 10%

U.S. Work Eligibility: U.S. Citizen

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide superior customer service and possess the ability to work independently and with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Perform outreach and recruitment services under the supervision of a OVA employee

Answer telephones and give information to callers, take messages, or transfer calls to appropriate individuals .

Greet visitors or callers and handle their inquiries or direct them to the appropriate persons according to their needs (i.e. Counseling, Financial Aid, Tutoring, Women’s Center, Vet Success,

Open Door, or CMVE)

Manage paper or electronic filing systems, recording information, updating paperwork, or maintaining documents

Create, maintain, and enter information into databases.

Prepare or assist with the preparation of required reports to the Veterans Administration. These include enrollment certifications, notices or changes of enrollment and periodic verification of pursuit of training.

Operate office equipment, such as fax machines, copiers, or phone systems and arrange for repairs when equipment malfunctions.

Assist with the filing of documents, paper or electronic, in support of VA submission requirements.

Obtain proper paperwork from students utilizing the Veteran Intake Form.

Assist with the review of VA reporting fee payments to ensure accuracy.

Assist students with submission of updated class schedules via the Electronic Enrollment

Notification (EEN)

Assist in the processing of the Electronic Enrollment Notifications under supervision of a VA

Certifying Official.

Ability to work effectively as a team within TCC’s Veteran’s Affairs Offices and student services; engage and interact collegially with administrators, faculty, staff, parents, students, college contracted bookstore, and the general public.

Ability to communicate and interact frequently with internal and external customers using both verbal and written communications

Assist military-related students in applying for benefits and ensure proper enrollment certifications and status changes are submitted.

Participate in outreach and distribute VA pamphlets or other information about VA programs to

VA beneficiaries or potential beneficiaries.

Distribute pamphlets and flyers about Tidewater Community College available programs and resources.

Verify student’s class schedules to ensure courses are VA approved in accordance with the academic advising transcript.

Report any students with a GPA less than a 2.0 to a VA Certifying Official

Assist the VA beneficiaries (Active Duty Service members, reservists, and eligible dependents) with any VA claim or related issue.

Maintain overall appearance of office space, to include copier and reception areas.

Required: Must be eligible for veteran’s benefits! Candidates must have strong administrative and customer service skills. Candidates must maintain a minimum of ¾ in training time for coursework.

Candidates must be able to participate in outreach activities during weekend, a minimum of two (2) events per semester. Be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, as well as, have the ability to work well with others. Possess a can do attitude and be able to work well under pressure in a fun and fast-paced environment. High School Diploma or equivalent required!

Compensation Related Information

Compensation: $7.25 per hour (minimum wage/non-taxable).

Company Profile: The Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE) is designed to increase student success, provide quality consolidated student service, and broaden Tidewater Community

College’s (TCC’s) already extensive service to military-related students; including active duty, reserves,

National Guard, Coast Guard, veterans, spouses, dependents, and Department of Defense and

Homeland Security employees. TCC’s CMVE provides veteran affairs advisors at each of the college’s four campuses. CMVE staff members provide a wide variety of services. Support includes coordination and delivery of services related to college application, domicile determination, placement and career readiness testing, advising and planning, financial aid, veterans benefits enrollment, obtaining college credit for prior military experience, course registration, and tuition payment procedures.

The CMVE is a college-wide function providing counseling, advising, and student supportive services for credit and continuing education certifications and degrees to military students, no matter where they are located worldwide.

Work Hours: Monday and Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. During extended hours Monday thru Thursday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. ; Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and

Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
