“The Deep Global Ocean: New Views, New Tools, New Discoveries”
Park City Institute / Strategic News Service "Future in Review" Speaker Series
February 20, 2015
PARK CITY, UT – Oceanographer John Delaney gives new meaning to the concept of delving
beneath the surface. He and his fellow researchers are developing a global underwater laboratory that
uses technology – submerged and seafloor-roaming robots, sensors, hi-def cameras, fiber optics and
data collection devices – to instantly reveal what lies beneath the waves. By accessing the depths in
real time via Internet feeds, the opportunities to engage the public and to better understand our
oceans and our planet as a whole are unprecedented. Professor Delaney comes to Park City on
Friday, February 20, as part of the Park City Institute / Strategic News Service “Future in
Review” Speaker Series. The evening, “The Deep Global Ocean: New Views, New Tools, New
Discoveries,” takes place in the intimate Black Box Theater of Park City’s Eccles Center;
7:30p.m. Tickets are $25.
Since the 1960s, Professor Delaney’s geologic and oceanographic knowledge and studies have set
him apart as an innovator, educator, team leader and all-around expert. His career has taken him from
active volcanoes on the Galápagos Islands to underwater volcanoes and (virtually) to the moons of
Jupiter: Delaney has served on NASA committees dedicated to defining the nature of the missions to
Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons. He’s initiated and led international research programs that have
spanned decades, published 100s of scientific papers, and served as chief scientist on more than 45
oceanographic research cruises. His work has been the subject of documentaries, and he has co-led
several research expeditions (beginning with VISIONS’05) which broadcast the first-ever live, highdefinition video from the seafloor.
Since 1997, Professor Delaney has led the University of Washington team of scientists and engineers
on the development of the first U.S. Regional Cabled Ocean Observatory (part of the NSF’s Ocean
Observatories Initiative). The 575-mile cabled network crisscrossing the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate
in the northeast Pacific Ocean will give scientists – and the public – high-bandwidth access to the
ocean floor through nearly two miles of water column. This naturally occurring, interactive lab
(assisted by sensors and bandwidth) has the potential to reveal data on everything from microbes and
fish populations to tsunamis and climate change.
“Professor Delaney has likened this program to a NASA mission,” says PCI executive director Teri
Orr. “And, in many ways, it is an exploration of the unknown. There is so much to learn about our
oceans. The implications of this team’s discoveries are extraordinary – for researchers and for the
entire planet.”
Sharon Anderson Morris, SNS Programs Director and Managing Director of SNS FiReFilms, will
facilitate Professor John Delaney’s talk. The evening concludes with a question and answer session
with the audience.
PCI’s partnership with the innovative Strategic News Service allows the Park City, Utah-based, nonprofit organization to introduce the community to some of the world’s greatest minds and ideas.
Following Professor Delaney’s February talk, the series continues with Dr. Philip Low, Ph.D.,
Founder, Chairman, and CEO of NeuroVigil, Inc, and Research Affiliate, MIT (March 20, 2015).

ENTERTAINING, EDUCATING AND ILLUMINATING SINCE 1998
Park City Institute (formerly Park City Performing Arts Foundation) is a non-profit organization,
dedicated to bringing world-class performances and new ideas to the community. Founded in 1994, PCI
presents internationally renowned and cutting edge musicians, actors, authors, comedians, dancers,
speakers and film at The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Center for the Performing Arts (a joint-use
facility with the Park City School District). PCI is dedicated to introducing young people to the arts
through free student outreach workshops, shows and demonstrations. The institute proudly launched the
Mega Genius Supply Store and IQ HQ - a free, after school literacy program and very thinky retail store
- in January 2010. And the organization continues to illuminate with TEDx events, Curiosities evenings
and The Park City Institute / Strategic News Service “Future in Review” Speaker Series. The
organization recently wrapped up its 11th season of summer concerts at Deer Valley Resort.
