The Royal Naval Sailing Association Appointment of an Events and Marketing Secretary Introduction The Royal Naval Sailing Association is looking for a new part time Events and Marketing Secretary to be responsible for facilitating and planning sailing events. The Royal Naval Sailing Club (RNSA) is a private members club that was founded by members of the Royal Navy in 1935 at a general meeting with the principle objective of ‘encouraging sailing throughout the service’ which endures to this day (see www.rnsa.org for further details). Membership includes serving and past Officers, Ratings and other ranks of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Marines Reserve, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Commonwealth Naval Forces. Associate membership is offered to serving members and veterans of the Army, RAF and Civil Service Sailing Associations. The Association is ultimately governed by its Central Committee who set policy based upon the needs of the members. The Events and Marketing Secretary will report to the RNSA General Secretary who works closely with the Commodore, Chairman and elected Flag Officers to implement policy and manage all aspects of the day to day running of the Association. All paid staff are employed by the RNSA Chairman. Member related events take place seven days per week throughout the year and so the 20 hours a week role will require flexibility to work some weekends, Bank Holidays and evenings. The ability to coordinate effectively with the RNSA Flag Officers and the RNSA Branch Captains (RNSA has nine Branch geographically based organisations around the UK from the Clyde to Falmouth which deliver sailing locally and are based where the RN operate and have operated from) is essential for the smooth running of the activities that take place of which many are run by member volunteers. The successful applicant will require a knowledge and understanding of running sailing events. Key Responsibilities: Event Management Help all the RNSA Rear Commodores and Branch Captains deliver events, training camps and tours. Populate and promote the annual calendar of events to include the major Branch events. Examples across the disciplines to include: o Cruising: 1. Support major sponsored chartering events. 2. Assist the Branch Cruising secretaries as required in the delivery of intra-Branch events. o Dinghy sailing: 1. Inter Service Match Racing 2. Inter Command Dinghy championships o Offshore sailing: 1. Services Offshore Regatta 2. RN Offshore Regatta o Windsurfing: 1. Inter Service Racing and Wave competitions 2. Joint forces open competitions 3. Inter Services Speed Week. Promote youth sailing. Advertise and market events across the Naval Service highlighting clashes with other RN sailing discipline events, other services’ events and national events. Ensure that the internet and intranet web pages are up to date. Identify opportunities for events by conducting research amongst RNSA members, other Yacht Clubs, Sailing Clubs and Service Sailing Associations particularly racing against other Navies and sailing clubs. Discuss with Branch Committee secretaries professional development provision (winter lectures etc). Co-ordinate planning with the SO1 Sports at HMS TEMERAIRE. Ensure events stay within the allocated budget agreed by the Central Committee. Facilitate events by ensuring that booking of the required infrastructure such as safety boats/crews, marks, trophies etc. is in place. Ensure that appropriate insurance, legal and health and safety obligations are adhered to. Coordinate any contractors and external providers involved in RNSA events. Coordination with MOD and other agencies as required for security access, boat moves, car parking and medical support. Identifying and booking VIPs or guest speakers at events where appropriate. Collate the supporting paperwork for events. Attend and assist the Royal Naval Sailing Manager at ‘fresher’s fairs’. Carry out post event evaluation. Assist the General Secretary to run RNSA functions/events. Attend RNSA management meetings and the AGM. The Candidate Profile Background The candidate will have a broad managerial experience, proven in a service delivery environment. He or she will be self-motivated with the ability to work on their own initiative. He or she will have demonstrable experience in organising sailing events and the requisite administrative skills.
