To plagiarize is "to use another person's idea or a part of their work and pretend that it is your own" (Cambridge Dictionaries Online, 2009). This includes: Copying or paraphrasing material from any source without due acknowledgment Using another's ideas without due acknowledgment. Plagiarism can be unintentional. Unintentional plagiarism is generally manifested where students do not have an intention to deceive the teacher. (Sutherland-Smith, 2008) Plagiarism detection software There are a number of methods for determining if plagiarism has occurred. One method is to use plagiarism detection software, such as Turnitin.1 Turnitin Submitting a paper in Turnitin To submit a paper in Turnitin, follow the steps: 1. Click the Browse button to find the file on your computer 5. Click Submit Reports in Turnitin Turnitin utilizes colour conventions to indicate the overall similarity of text between the student paper and Turnitin sources.2 Possible similarity indices are: 2 Color Percentage matched Green <1% - 24% Yellow 25% - 49% Orange 50% - 74% Red 75% - 100% Turnitin sources include student papers, the internet, academic journals and e-books.
