2015 Request For Proposals
Avon Campus Grants to Activate Bystanders to Reduce Sexual Assault and Dating Abuse
GRANT APPLICATION GUIDELINES
2015 RFP: Overview and Minimum Requirements
The Avon Foundation for Women is pleased to announce a total of $250,000 for 25 new grants
to expand the Avon Foundation Campus Grants Program. Colleges and universities may apply
for funds for bystander projects aimed at reducing campus sexual assault and dating abuse.
This year’s RFP prioritizes Bystander Intervention Tactics. Successful applicants will
demonstrate and be able to measure how their campus projects will generate awareness by
instilling a sense of responsibility for students and faculty to step in and take action when abuse
is suspected or observed, providing the training and skills necessary for bystanders to safely
intervene. Projects may include:
o Skills-building workshops to increase numbers of trained students and faculty;
o Campus-wide outreach tactics including social media campaigns, theater projects,
and/or peer-to-peer trainings;
o Development of awareness materials, i.e. resource guides/pamphlets, website pages,
posters;
o Video or print PSAs or short films.
The Avon Foundation Campus Grants Program should emphasize prevention through
education. Funded programs should be able to:
o Develop and execute a minimum of three on-campus outreach events / trainings /
workshops to be completed in the one-year grant period, and report on numbers served
at these programs;
o Educate students on how to reduce or prevent sexual assault and dating abuse;
o Provide resources and referrals to community-based agencies and advocates;
o Develop or expand data collection and analyses of their program’s reach and impact,
demonstrating sustainability and garnering additional program support.
o Demonstrate how their program responds or complements the recommendations
proposed in NOT ALONE: The First Report of the White House Task Force to Protect
Students from Sexual Assault issued in 2014.

Background
Young women ages 16-24 experience the highest rates of violence. Since the Clery Act was
passed in 1990, a variety of initiatives have been developed to educate college administrators
on the issues of gender violence, particularly sexual assault, and to provide resources for
college campuses to reduce violence. Although much has been learned, there is a great deal
more that can be accomplished to implement effective campus-wide policies and prevention
practices to prevent and reduce incidences of violence.
In 2014, the White House issued NOT ALONE: The First Report of the White House Task Force to
Protect Students from Sexual Assault, highlighting steps school administrators can and must
take to honor their obligation to protect all students from sexual assault and violence.
Recognizing that school administrators bear the burden of responsibility to provide safe
communities for all students, the Avon Foundation partnered with Futures Without Violence to
develop Guidelines for Preventing and Responding to Gender-Based Violence in Higher
Education. These guidelines highlight best practices for creating and promoting a campus norm
of interpersonal respect and non-violent relationships, and can be downloaded for free.
Students must be part of the solution to help prevent violence perpetrated against and by their
peers. Campus sexual assault and dating abuse prevention programs have educated significant
numbers of student groups and faculty to create awareness, to recognize the warning signs of
abuse and to encourage students to safely intervene to help prevent violence.
