New Credit Program Required Narrative Criteria A: Appropriateness to Mission Statement of Program Goals and Objectives This program will become the first flexible AA degree program in Liberal Arts: Behavioral and Social Sciences in the Greater Los Angeles area which will attract potential transfer students who are planning to major in any of the social sciences or related fields. Students will have the option of completing the transfer curriculum and continuing on to a four-year university. Terminal students, as well, may be more motivated to complete our program and find employment in any of the human services. Catalog Description The LATTC Liberal Arts: Behavioral and Social Sciences AA Degree Program is designed to meet the needs of transfer students who wish to complete their first two years of education in a community college, and also to provide sufficient critical thinking skills to students who wish to find employment. Program Requirements Requirements for the Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts: Behavioral and Social Sciences may be met by completing 24-25 units of required courses with a “C” or better grade, along with 36 units of General Education and elective courses, meeting Plan A graduation requirements, as well as CSU GE/Breadth or IGETC requirements. Background and Rationale Historically AA degree programs in the social sciences are not common. As the U.S. is recovering from the economic recession, more students are returning to school and are interested in degree program options in which they could complete the first two years of education at a community college (with a much lower tuition than the universities) before they transfer and obtain a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences. LATTC also has an AA degree program in Liberal Studies, but is designed to meet the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential requirements. The total cost is approximately $200 per year. Facilities and Equipment Plan LATTC has adequate classroom space for the behavioral and social science classes. However, many of the classrooms need updated computers, DVD players, and projectors. Financial Support Plan Our financial support will be mainly from the college’s operational budget. We are requesting the college to allocate an on-going annual amount of $10,000 for purchasing our much-needed lab supplies.
