Syllabus for MECH 203 Materials Science, Fall 2015 Instructor: Prof. Dr. Mehmet Halidun Keleştemur hkelestemur@meliksah.edu.tr Course Hours: Mo; 08.30 - 09.45, Th; 15.15 - 16.35 Office Hours: Mo; 09.45-11.00 or by appointment (Engineering Faculty Building, 5. Floor) Teaching Assistant: Teaching Assistant (TA) Hasan Yeşilyurt, B04 Materials Science Lab Required Text: MATERIALS SCIENCE and ENGINEERING: An introduction by W.D. Callister (sixth edition or later editions) Scope: To introduce the materials science and engineering of ceramics, polymers, and electronic materials as well as metals. Topics include: introduction, bonding, crystallography, imperfections, diffusion, mechanical properties of metals, dislocations and strengthening mechanisms, Mech Eng; phase diagrams, corrosion and degradation of materials. Civil Eng; Structures and Properties of Ceramics, Applications and Processing of Ceramics Objectives: To develop an awareness of materials and their properties that, as an engineer, you must rely on in the future To introduce basic ideas, terminology and testing of materials To reveal relationships amongst processing -> structure -> properties -> performance To provide some background in Materials Science (structure - property relationships) To introduce Materials Engineering (designing set of properties based on these relationships) To develop ideas regarding materials selection and design Grading Policy: Class Participation: 5% Assignment: 10 X 1,0; total 00% Quiz: 10 X 2.5; total 25% Midterm Exam: 2x15 ; total 30% Final Exam: 40% The combination of class participation, assignments, quiz and midterm exams will make up 60% of the final mark with the remaining 40% based on the final exam. The final exam will be of 3 hours duration, covering entire course material and a “Closed Book" exam. The midterm tests are MANDATORY and covering only the certain chapters; students are responsible from first four weeks courses material at the first midterm exam and second four weeks courses material at the second midterm exam. There will be 12 assignments (homework, HW) and 12 quizzes throughout the semester. Students encourage working independently. Weekly homework will not be collected, but at least one HW question will be asked as one of the quiz questions. Best graded 10 quizzes will be considered. At the every beginning of the weeks (Monday) you will have a quiz covering the former week(s)’s course material. Quiz questions will be on reading assignments. Please see the Schedule for dates of assignments, quiz and exams. Midterm and Final Exam questions are mostly taking and modified from HW and examples solved in class. Every student is responsible for all materials covered in class and assigned reading material. HW, Quizzes, and Exams will be held for Academic Integrity. Students caught cheating will receive failing grade (F) and will be sent to the discipline committee.
