In Memoriam -- Richard B. Grimball
Entered into eternal rest in Charleston, SC, on the morning of
February 7, 2009, Richard Barnwell Grimball, husband of Adele
Crawford Grimball. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and
friends of Mr. and Mrs. Richard B. Grimball are invited to attend
the funeral services of the former in St. Michael's Episcopal
Church, Charleston, SC, Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at ten-thirty
o'clock. Internment, Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston.
Mr. Grimball was born September 14, 1926, in Charleston, SC, the
son of George Elliott Grimball and Frances Ravenel Buist Grimball.
He attended public schools in Charleston and was graduated from
The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT, Yale University and Harvard
Business School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II
on the ammunition ship USS Lakewood Victory as a signalman
third class. He was recalled to active duty in 1950. He participated
in mine sweeping operations off the coast of North Korea on the
minesweeper USS Curlew as a navigator.
Active in community affairs, he served as president of The Trident
Chamber of Commerce, The United Way and The Kiwanis Club. He
was on the Board of the South Carolina State Chamber of
Commerce, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Salvation Army,
Boy Scouts, South Carolina Historical Society, College of
Charleston Foundation, Charleston Day School, Wofford College
Associates and the Historic Charleston Foundation. He was a
member of the Carolina Yacht Club, South Carolina Society, St.
Cecilia Society and St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where he served
as Senior Warden. His entire career was with The Citizens and
Southern National Bank where he retired as Vice-Chairman and a
member of the Executive Committee.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston; a daughter, Adele G.
Simmons of Mt. Pleasant, SC; a son, Rev. Richard B. Grimball, Jr.
and wife, Paige, of Greenville, SC; four grandchildren; and a sister,
Frances G. Maclean of Savannah, GA.
