"Keep Westmoreland County Beautiful" An Affiliate of Keep America Beautiful since 2011 Dear Friends, The staff and volunteers at Westmoreland Cleanways have been busier than ever these last few months conducting collection events, cleanups, educational programs, and planning all the activities that will best meet the recycling and disposal needs of our residents. The most pressing issue has been the implementation of the state's new electronics recycling law that went into effect in January. To say that there have been a few glitches is putting it mildly. Read the lead article in the Fall By The Way for an in-depth discussion of how it's affecting all of us. Also in the newsletter is information about the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste collection (October 5), the addition of Shop Demo Depot as a new partner at our October 12 collection event, the next Yough River Canoe Cleanup with Youghiogheny Canoe Outfitters (October 20), and updates on single stream recycling. Other accomplishments we didn't have room for in the newsletter but just as noteworthy: Our Program Director, Natalie Reese, passed her Professional Recycling Certification exam in July, so is now an official Certified Recycling Professional. This professional certification is earned by completing a rigorous training program sponsored by the Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania (PROP) and Penn State University Altoona. We also celebrate Natalie's second anniversary with Westmoreland Cleanways. Congratulations to Natalie for her dedication and service to Westmoreland County. Westmoreland Cleanways, along with Shop Demo Depot and Derry Borough, were honored at this year's PROP Conference with 2013 Waste Watcher Awards. The Waste Watcher Award, sponsored by PROP and SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America-Keystone Chapter) recognizes businesses, organizations and individuals for their outstanding achievements in recycling and waste reduction. o Past recipients of the Waste Watcher Award in Westmoreland County include Levin Furniture, the Delmont Lions Club, and the Loyalhanna Watershed Association. In partnership with Waste Management Valley Landfill's Wildlife Habitat Council Corporate Lands for Learning project, along with the Botanical Society of Westmoreland County and Penn State Master Gardeners, we planted a vegetable garden on landfill property which is now producing abundant fresh vegetables and distributing them to local church-run food banks. Keep Westmoreland County Beautiful, Westmoreland Cleanways' program arm of Keep America Beautiful, was awarded three grants totaling $16,000: o $1,000 Cigarette Litter Prevention Program to purchase outdoor smoker stands, pocket ashtrays and car ashtrays for Keystone State Park and Westmoreland County Parks. o $5,000 2013 UPS/KAB Tree Planting Grant awarded to the City of Latrobe for its Lincoln Avenue Trail Project. o $10,000 KAB/Waste Management Think Green Grant to implement apartment recycling programs in the City of Jeannette and the City of Greensburg.
