Plan of Scheduled Course in Politics, 2014-2016
This document is intended to help students to plan their schedule of classes for their politics
major. Please note that there may be changes and additions, especially for the year 2015-16 as
we hire faculty to offer courses in lieu of regular fulltime faculty who will be on scheduled
leaves of absence. The document will be periodically updated to take into account those
developments. Additionally, students planning to study abroad may apply appropriate courses to
satisfying the below concentrations. Such students should consult with their faculty adviser and
the chair of the department to determine appropriate categories for those classes taken abroad.
For the major, two introductory courses are required. All of the introductory courses are
taught every semester, except POLS 105: Introduction to Political Theory and POLS 107:
Critical Issues in American Politics, which are taught every year. The introductory courses
do not contribute to completing concentrations, but they serve as appropriate training for
several concentrations. Below find a list of introductory courses and the concentrations for
which they serve as gateway courses:
101: American Government and Politics (gateway course for national institutions and policies,
citizenship, identity and diversity, law and justice, and political action concentrations)
103: Comparative Politics (gateway course for development/political economy, national
institutions and policies, citizenship, and political action concentrations)
105: Introduction to Political Theory (gateway course for law and justice and conflict and peace
