Introduction
I started to learn English many years ago. At that time I didn’t know, why I chose
this language. I was at a loss what foreign language to study. And now I can say with
sure: "It was good choice for me”. Isn’t it?
Language belongs to each of us. Everyone uses words. What is about language
that makes people so curious? The answer is that there is almost nothing in our lives
that is not touched by language. We all speak and listen: so I am interested in the
origin of the words, how they appear and die.
I chose this topic because it’s very important and topical for us.
Only by learning English I understood the meanings of many words: pricelist,
talk-show, PR manager, press-release and others. It is so exciting to understand that
you know why we so speak. In our English lessons we study not only the language
we talk about the history of the words, emblems, magnificent symbols, sights, cities,
legends. From lessons I got information about the rise of English. It is a story of
wonderful success.
The rise of English is a story of wonderful success. When Julius Caesar landed in
Britain nearly two thousand years ago, English did not exist. Five hundred years later,
in the 5th century, English was already spoken by the people who inhabited Great
Britain but they were not many, and their English was not the language we know
today. Nearly a thousand years later, at the end of the 16th century, when William
Shakespeare created his works, English was the native language of about 6 million
Englishmen. At that time English was not used anywhere else except Great Britain.
Through the centuries, as the result of various historical events, English spread
throughout the world.

- We conducted a survey of 10-11 classes on certain issues
Chapter 1. World English language
Today English is represented in every continent. English is mixing with other
languages around the world.
Nowadays, four hundred years later, 750 million people all over the world use
English, and half of those speak it as a mother tongue. Of all the 2700 world
languages English is one of the richest. For example, compare English, German and
French: English has a vocabulary of about 500 000 words, German - 185 000, and
French - fewer than 100 000.
At the end of the 20th century English is more widely spoken and written,
than any other language has ever been. It has become the language of the planet, the
first truly global language. Three quarters of the world's mail and its telexes and
telegrammes are in English. More than half of the world's scientific periodicals and
eighty per cent of the information in the world's computers are also in English.
English is the main language of business. It is the language of sports: the official
language of the Olympics.
The English language surrounds us like a sea, and like the waters of a deep sea it
is full of mysteries. English is and has always been constantly changing. Some word
die, some change their meanings and all the time new words appear in the language.
There are several ways to add new words to the language. One of them is by
borrowing words from other languages. In modern English there are many words that
were borrowed from Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and other languages.
When Columbus came back from South America he brought home to Spain new
plants – potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco. With the plants he brought their names. This
is how these words appeared in Spanish and later were borrowed from it by the
English language.
The words that are borrowed tell us about the countries they have come from. For
example, many Italian words that are now part of English (opera, operetta, piano)
have to do with music. This is natural as Italian musicians have always been among
4
the most famous in the world. Many of the words that people borrow from other
languages are names of food.
Learning languages is the most marvelous thing in the life. It is the most pleasant
present, which was given to the humanity by the development of the world. So the
language is the straight way to the progress of any kind. English is a world language.
In my opinion, it is the mirror of all current events of our modern life. It is a
connective bridge from science to technology, from trade relations to cultural, from
commerce to business on the world’s level. It is a fact that a half of world’s scientific
literature is written by English, 75 % of mail and telephone calls are in English. So
again and again it becomes clear to us, that English is everywhere and to know it
today is absolutely necessary for every educated person, for every good specialist.

Chapter 2. What gives me the English
If I went to a foreign country for traveling I would mix with other people without
any problems. I think in every city we can find people who know English. Also
English is a computer language. Most of the computer games, programmes are made
in English. You can write electronic letters to your friends to other countries. And
many cities in the Internet use English as general.
As for me, I think, that learning English opens me the fascinate world of
different adventures and knowledge. It is an everyday resource of information, which
helps me to grow higher over myself. I’m sure, that there is a profit in the each aspect
of the study:
First of all it makes us high-educated persons, because it makes our outlook much
wider.
The second, it helps to grow as an intellectual and educated person, because I’ve
got a beautiful opportunity to read in English, maybe to be a student of exchange
programmes, to have a pen-friend, to go to international summer camp.
Perhaps, the next point is too simple: today the music is in the power of the west
and the majority of all young men, I’m not an exception, listen to it with great
pleasure, but it becomes more better, when you can understand the words of the
songs and become capable to feel everything, what is sung about.
More than that, nowadays we also buy many things, clothes from other countries,
but if we know English well, it becomes possible to read something about size, what
the thing made of and others.
