Student Accommodations and Resources (StAR)
Empowering students with disabilities to enable equal access to an education at JJC
Hello,
Thank you for inviting a StAR (Student Accommodations and Resources) Representative to the
staffing as the student’s smooth transition to JJC is very important to the StAR office; however,
attendance from a StAR staff member is not possible at this time. We welcome you to have the
student contact StAR directly for information concerning the StAR program at JJC if there are
particular questions beyond what is included in this letter. We service approximately 550 students
with disabilities each semester with accommodations. StAR offers free tutoring and assistive
technology is available.
Below you will find two general areas of information addressed: Part A discusses documentation
that is required in order to be eligible for the StAR Program in which students receive
accommodations and services under the American Disability Act Amended Act and Section 504 of
the Rehabilitation Act. Part B discusses the admissions procedure at JJC.
Part A:
1) Specific Learning Disability Documentation Policy: All assessments must include the date
administered. Include the following documents:
A. Transition IEP with Summary of Performance included.
B. A copy of the last 3-year Re-evaluation Part 1 and Part 2 IEP. This includes the eligibility
information that is most helpful.
C. Achievement test scores:
a. Preferred – Individual achievement test administered in the last 4 years.
b. Acceptable – ACT PLAN scores.
D. If available, an IQ (Cognitive) test that was administered at any time during the student’s
school years. (K-12).
E. Information regarding processing skills, memory, etc.
2) Cognitive Impairment Documentation Policy: (see information under: Specific Learning
Disability)
a. This MUST include an IQ score
3) Autism Spectrum Disorder Documentation Policy:
A. Information from Psychologist confirming diagnosis (preferably recent confirmation but
original diagnosis may be considered on an individual basis if more recent is not available).
B. Transition IEP with Summary of Performance included.
C. A copy of the last 3-year Re-evaluation Part 1 and Part 2 IEP. This includes the eligibility
information that is most helpful.
D. Achievement test scores:
a. Preferred – Individual achievement test administered in the last 4 years.
b. Acceptable – ACT PLAN scores
4) Other Disabilities: ADHD, Psychological, Medical, Vision, Hearing, etc. Documentation
Policy: Medical documentation is required for all other disabilities. Forms for these disabilities
are available on StAR web site under “Documentation Policy”, http://www.jjc.edu/disabilityservices/Pages/documentation-policy.aspx. These forms must be completed and signed by the
appropriate physician, psychiatrist, licensed clinical professional counselor/social worker,
optician, ophthalmologist, or audiologist. If the student was on an IEP or ADA 504 Plan, the
latest copy of this should be included as well for additional information.
In order to receive accommodations under ADA and/or Section 504, a student must provide the
documentation shown above at the Intake Appointment. Interested students can call 815-280-2230
to schedule the Intake Appointment. Students should not wait until August to contact the StAR
department. It may take two to three weeks to obtain an appointment for Intake. A
mandatory orientation of all new students in the StAR program is held the week prior to school
starting. Parents are encouraged to attend as well.
Part B:
1) The student should apply to JJC early, preferably by February. This can be done either online
or in a paper format through Admissions. Please use the link:
http://www.jjc.edu/admissions/pages/apply-now.aspx for more information. Specific web pages
differ according to full or part time students so it is necessary to select the appropriate link on this
web page.
2) Take the ACT Compass Placement Test. For further information go to the following web site:
www.jjc.edu/info/compass.
 If the student had the ACT test in audio format:
o The ACT ASSET test, an alternative paper and pencil placement test, can be read to
the student.
o The letter from ACT indicating the approval for the audio version of ACT will be
required for the ACT ASSET.
o This accommodation is not provided for every student who had classroom tests read
as an accommodation in high school, but ONLY for those who had the ACT test
read.
3) Fall registration will begin in April and new full time students must sign up for the New
Student Orientation. The web site for admissions provides a video for the student to view after
which he/she will be able to select a date for the New Student Orientation/Registration. The group
registration lasts several hours. Students who sign up early will have the best pick of classes which
is very important in setting up a schedule.
4) STAR Intake may take place either before or after the New Student Orientation. If it occurs
prior to group registration we will assist the student in selecting classes so he/she is more prepared
for group registration. If it occurs afterward StAR will look at the student's schedule and make any
recommendations needed to adjust the schedule for the student's needs. Changes can then be made.
Further information about StAR can be found on the StAR web page at www.jjc.edu/info/star.
Please feel free to contact the StAR Office if you have any questions.
