Fellowships, Scholarships, and Grants Qualifying for In-State Tuition and Subsidized Health Insurance Qualifying fellowships scholarships, and grants are recognized as falling into three categories: (1) Federally funded graduate fellowships, scholarship, and grants in which the award is made directly to the student or to/via the university in the name of the student. Awards in this category are listed in Table 1 (see below.) (2) Institutional commitments, including agreements entered into by the institution and /or nationally competitive, student-submitted fellowships, scholarship, and grants. In order to qualify for in-state tuition and subsidized health insurance, awards in this category must meet the following threshold: The minimum tenure of the award is one academic year. The minimum stipend per academic year is $15,000. Examples of eligible fellowships are listed in Table 1. These are intended as examples only; the list is not inclusive. Other awards may be deemed eligible if they meet the threshold described above. (3) Fellowships, Scholarships, and Grants for Overseas Research / Fieldwork: In the case of advanced doctoral students who receive fellowship/grant awards in support of overseas research or fieldwork, tuition remission will be granted when the following conditions are met: The student is advanced to doctoral candidacy and must remain registered for dissertation hours while engaged in overseas research. The name of the award appears on Table 1 below OR the award meets the same threshold described for Category 2 above. If a question arises as to whether an award qualifies for in-state tuition and subsidized health insurance, consultation will be available through the Associate Provost for Graduate Education and the Office of Graduate Fellowships. Questions that will be addressed include: Does the award fall within one of the eligible categories? What is the duration of the award, and what is the stipend? Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowships Category 2: Institutional Commitments Qualifying awards include nationally and internationally competitive fellowships, scholarships, and grants that meet duration and stipendary support thresholds set by the University, as well as awards incurred through commitments by the University. Examples of eligible awards: Ford Foundation Pre-Dissertation and Dissertation Fellowships Mellon / American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Dissertation Fellowships AAUW American Fellowships and International Fellowships Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans Harry Frank Guggenheim Dissertation Fellowships SREB-State Doctoral Fellowships and Dissertation Fellowships Other awards may be deemed qualifying if they meet the thresholds for Category 2, to be decided on a case-by-case basis. Category 3: Fellowships for Overseas Research and Fieldwork The following awards will be considered eligible for the purpose of doctoral students who are required to register for dissertation credit hours while engaged in overseas research or fieldwork supported by a nationally or internationally competitive fellowship awards: Fulbright U.S. Student Program Awards Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships Boren Fellowships SSRC International Dissertation Research Fellowships IREX Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) Other awards may be deemed qualifying if they meet the same thresholds Category 2, to be decided on a case-by-case basis. 2
