Background and Purpose
The Dr. Joe D. Townsend ’67 Leadership Fellows program was created to bridge the educational
gap between learning/understanding and grasping/implementation. Leadership students who
desired to expand their knowledge of leadership theory and application proposed the creation
of the program. With the support of several donors, the program was initiated for launch in
Spring, 2009.
Program Goals
The Dr. Joe D. Townsend ’67 Leadership Fellows will change the world through graduates with
enhanced leadership capacity for positive relationships in the global community. The program
is a prestigious, rigorous and unique environment where students selected from the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences augment their leadership skills in a context – beyond the
traditional classroom—that supports the fellows’ trials, errors and successes. The program is
organized to explore four leadership competencies: Expanding One’s Vision, Developing Self
and Others, Serving Organizations and Reinforcing Positive Values.
Expectations of Fellows
The Dr. Joe D. Townsend ’67 Leadership fellows register for a 3 credit hour Spring, 2016 class –
ALED 401 (Advanced Professional Leadership Development). The class meets on Wednesday
and Friday from 10:20-11:45am. On Wednesday, we gather to learn focus on a specific
leadership concept. A guest leader guides a provocative discussion about his/her leadership
experiences on Friday. The fellows contribute their thoughts, inquiries and ideas during an
important question and answer session. In addition to the regular class, the fellows participate
in a retreat at the beginning of the semester. One field trip is planned, during the semester, for
fellows to visit an international site to learn more about cross-cultural leadership.
