EPC 15-04 Revision of the General Education Committee Charge
General Education Committee
(Supersedes AAAP010.004)

RESOLVED: the Academic Senate is responsible for establishing and revising General Education
requirements at CSUDH; and be it further,
RESOLVED: The General Education Committee (GEC), as a standing committee of the Academic Senate,
provides “appropriate oversight and makes appropriate recommendations concerning the
implementation, conduct and evaluation of these requirements.”1; and be it further,
RESOLVED: The Committee reviews, approves or denies proposals for curricular modification including
the addition or removal of specific course offerings within designated GE area requirements; conducts
periodic area-by-area program review as well as student learning outcomes assessment and program
assessment in accordance with CSUDH policies for such procedures; and implements General Education
policies as determined by the State of California Code of Education, rules and policies adopted by the
Board of Trustees of the California State University, and/or resolutions by the CSUDH Academic Senate;
and be it further,
RESOLVED:
The membership of GEC shall be comprised as follows:
Voting Members:
1 Academic Senate appointment
1 Student representative
1 Faculty member from each of the following colleges; the College of Arts and Humanities;
the College Business Administration and Public Policy; the College of Education; the College of
Health, Human Services and Nursing; and the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences
1 Faculty member from “social sciences” elected by the faculty of Anthropology, History,
Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology Departments. The Dean of the College of Natural
and Behavioral Sciences is charged with the responsibility for conducting this election.
1 Faculty member from “natural sciences” elected by the faculty of Biology, Chemistry and
Biochemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Environment, Mathematics, and Physics
Departments. The Dean of the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences is charged with the
responsibility for conducting this election.
1 Faculty member from “arts and humanities” elected by the faculty from Africana
Studies, Art and Design, Asian Pacific Studies, Chicano/a Studies, Communications, Dance,
Digital Media Arts, English, Modern Languages, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Labor
Studies, Music, Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding, Philosophy, Theater Arts,

and Women’s Studies. The Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities is charged with the
responsibility for conducting this election.

Staff support will be provided by Academic Programs; and be it further,
RESOLVED: To maintain continuity in decision making, all terms of service will be staggered and
members will serve for a period of two academic years. A faculty member elected by the committee
members will serve as chair for a one-year term which may be renewed; and be it further,
RESOLVED: the Chair of the GE Committee reports on the Committee’s activities to the Academic Senate
during its regularly scheduled meetings at the request of the Chair of the Academic Senate; and be it
further,
RESOLVED: While decisions of the Committee are normally final, under extraordinary circumstances
they may be referred by the Academic Senate to the Senate Executive Committee for adjudication2; and
be it further,
RESOLVED: That the Academic Senate of California State University, Dominguez Hills endorse these
modifications; and be it further,
RESOLVED: That these changes be codified in policy by Academic Affairs; and be it further,
RESOLVED: The Upper-Division Integrative Studies Subcommittees review and recommend all proposals
for curricular modification of upper-division integrative studies courses in their relevant area of
expertise. These are: the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences; and be it further,
RESOLVED: The membership in the respective Upper-Division Integrative Studies Subcommittees will
usually be comprised of representatives from departments whose faculty regularly offer UD GE courses.
If the committee or relevant departments or faculty members determine there is a need for additional

normal procedures; decisions that are arbitrary, unreasonable, prejudiced or capricious; and decisions
involving conflicts of interest. The burden of proof that the decision was incorrect lies with the party
making the appeal. Errors in procedure will normally be remanded back to the committee for
reconsideration.

expertise the committee will extend an invitation to additional faculty members for a specific
deliberation or for the academic year. Preferably, the committee will ask the non-represented
department to elect and send a voting representative.
