TRC Summer Workshops and Other District Approved Workshops The Cultural Matrix: Understanding Black Youth Thursdays, July 9, 16, and 23 10:00 to 12:00 6 hours NFHS Facilitator: Susan Rhodenizer This book study group will look at some of the entries in the text and discuss what implications these studies and essays from scholars at major universities in this country have on teaching our students from this community. BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE TRC FOR THOSE WHO SIGN UP. The first assigned reading will be Chapter 2 that should be completed by the July 9th workshop meeting. About the book: “The Cultural Matrix seeks to unravel a uniquely American paradox: the socioeconomic crisis, segregation, and social isolation of disadvantaged black youth, on the one hand, and their extraordinary integration and prominence in popular culture on the other. Despite school dropout rates over 40 percent, a third spending time in prison, chronic unemployment, and endemic violence, black youth are among the most vibrant creators of popular culture in the world. They also espouse several deeply held American values. To understand this conundrum, the authors bring culture back to the forefront of explanation, while avoiding the theoretical errors of earlier culture-of-poverty approaches and the causal timidity and special pleading of more recent ones. There is no single black youth culture, but a complex matrix of cultures - adapted mainstream, African-American vernacular, street culture, and hip-hop - that support and undermine, enrich and impoverish young lives. Hip-hop, for example, has had an enormous influence, not always to the advantage of its creators. However, its muscular message of primal honor and sensual indulgence is not motivated by a desire for separatism but by an insistence on sharing in the mainstream culture of consumption, power, and wealth. This interdisciplinary work draws on all the social sciences, as well as social philosophy and ethnomusicology, in a concerted effort to explain how culture, interacting with structural and environmental forces, influences the performance and control of violence, aesthetic productions, educational and work outcomes, familial, gender, and sexual relations, and the complex moral life of black youth. Through the exploration of books, song lyrics, video games and more, the two authors demonstrate how close reading can be rigorous, meaningful and joyous. The authors share a powerful three-step approach to close reading that can be applied to any text and offers students a concrete strategy for tackling complex text. Throughout this workshop, participants will explore what it means to conduct close readings through different lenses and how those lenses change depending on the type of text at hand (literary/informational). Likewise, participants will identify patterns that are evident throughout texts and recognize the relationships that exist among those patterns. After learning this approach to close reading, teachers will have time to apply what they’ve learned to their own lessons. As a result, participants should bring several grade level texts with them so they can create lessons that apply to their own classroom instruction .
