Residents urged to drop off unwanted prescription drugs April 27 for safe disposal
The Aurora Police Department invites the citizens of Aurora to clean out their medicine cabinets and bring expired,
unwanted or unused over-the-counter and prescription medications to the locations listed below for proper disposal.
The Drug Enforcement Administration is sponsoring National Pharmaceutical Take-Back Day, a nationwide effort to
collect unused medicine that has the added benefit of keeping medications out of the water supply.
Aurora Police Officers will be standing by at two locations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27. Both locations will be
drive- through accessible for your convenience

Aurora Municipal Center, east side, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway

The Medical Center of Aurora, north parking lot, 1501 S. Potomac St.
Officers staffing the event will accept prescription medications and scheduled narcotics, but will not accept any illegal
substances, syringes, needles, sharps, intravenous solutions, mercury thermometers or oxygen containers. In
addition, officers will not be able to accept chemotherapy / radioactive substances, flammable liquids (rubbing
alcohol) or pressurized canisters. No questions will be asked about any of the substances that are surrendered.
In the meantime, if you use any prescription medication, here is how to dispose of it safely:




Do not flush medications down the toilet or put them down the sink drain unless the label or accompanying
patient information specifically tells you to do so.
To dispose of all other prescription medication, take it out of its original container and mix it with cat litter or
coffee grounds. Put that mixture in a sealable bag or container with a lid and put it in the trash. Cross off any
identifying information on the prescription bottle and dispose of it in the trash.
Check with your pharmacist to see if they will take back your unused medications.
Participate in Colorado’s Medication Take Back Pilot Program by taking all non-controlled medications in their
containers to the pharmacy at King Soopers at 4271 S. Buckley Road. The drop box will list all acceptable
medications.
