University of Madurai, Tamilnadu, India – B.Sc (Hons) in Chemistry – First Class. (1973-1975) (1971-1972) (1968-1971) WORK EXPERIENCE GlaxoSmithKline / Glaxowellcome / Glaxo: - - - - (June 1975 – January 2009) Senior Research Scientist in Isotope Chemistry, (1989-2009). Primarily involved in the synthesis of isotopically labelled (radio and stable labelled) drug candidates for biological evaluation. Core team member on a variety of research/development projects within Isotope Chemistry, in a vast number of therapeutic areas, such as cardiovascular, CNS, antiviral, antifungal, antiinflammatory and anti-allergy. Utilised carbon-14 and tritium radio isotopes, as well as a variety of stable isotopes. Synthesised haptens and pet intermediates Synthesised labelled and unlabelled drug metabolites, either by conventional chemistry or by biotransformation process. Ability to handle microgram to multi-gram quantity of materials – For example, preparation of tritium labelled compounds involve handling of microgram quantity of materials where as preparation of unlabelled metabolites for clinical studies may involve handling of hundreds of grams of materials. Able to carry through a project from inception to completion with minimum supervision - For example, allocation of project, research into finding the best and quickest route to drug substance by modifying the current R&D route ensuring that the labelled input materials are available to make the route viable and meet the deadline. Research scientist in Dept of Organic Chemistry of Glaxo (1975-1989). Primarily involved in the synthesis of potential drug candidates for early phase drug metabolism studies. Co-author in a number of publications in major chemistry journals, such as Journal of Chemical Society and Journal of Labelled Compounds and Radiopharmaceuticals. (See attached list of key publications) LABORATORY RESPONSIBILITIES (GSK) - Responsible for Stable Isotope Library of Chemicals. Involved in: Maintaining stocks of stable labelled commercial reagents and in-house stable labelled drug candidates prepared for biological studies within Isotope Chemistry Department. Logging of all incoming and outgoing stable labelled materials using excel spreadsheet and carrying out monthly inventory with the help of technicians. Supervising routine dispensing of labelled drug substances by technicians for biological studies. - Responsible for disposal of radioactive waste and maintenance of Radioactive Waste Tank Room. Contributed to the section of Radiochemistry Local Rules in Isotope Chemistry governing the disposal and maintenance of Radioactive Waste Tank Room. - Responsible for transfer of stable labelled and radioactive materials between GSK sites and their customers worldwide. Liaison with the specialist couriers and the customers to ensure safe and secure transfer of materials. SPECIALIST SKILLS - Thirty years of experience using various analytical techniques such as TLC, HPLC, MS, LC-MS and NMR for routine analysis, identification and structure assignment of drug candidates. Hands on experience in use and routine maintenance of Radio TLC and HPLC equipments. Twenty years of experience handling: Radioisotopes such as carbon-14 and tritium for drug metabolism studies. Stable isotopes such as deuterium, carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 used for preparation of drug candidates for bio-analytical studies. TUTORING SKILLS More than 5 years of experience in coaching/mentoring chemistry students up to degree level. Highly experienced in coaching AS/A level students (OCR/Salters, AQA, EDEXEL). Very good feedback from students and parents. KEY PUBLICATIONS 1.
