2015 Spring/Summer CSA Program

What is CSA?
(Community Supported Agriculture )
CSA Began over 3 decades ago. It is growing exponentially across the nation. CSA brings small
local farmers and consumers together. Everyone enjoys knowing their food is grown locally and
safely. Everyone enjoys knowing exactly where their food came from and how it was grown.
Farmers in CSAs make a commitment to consumers to grow food for your table, and you
commit to purchasing a share of their harvest for the entire growing season. By purchasing a
share in the spring, we know how much seed and supplies to buy, and how many families we
will grow food for.
We, at Six Chicks and a JBird Farms, select only the best seed, mostly heirloom and organic
varieties. We pledge to never grow any GMO seed and to use the safest growing practices.
Here are some things that make our CSA unique:
Fresh: Let’s face it- Fresh is better. From the time we harvest to when you receive your CSA
share will typically be less than a 24 to 48 hour period. (Most of the time it is 4 to 12 hours old
when you pick it up at market). Contrast this quality to produce you buy in a neighborhood
supermarket, where everything is likely at least a week old before it even hits the shelf. Some
supermarket produce is picked WEEKS before it hits the shelf well before it is ripe, and then
shipped overseas. Most of the time, wax coatings that contain plastic-like compound
preservatives are used to keep supermarket veggies and fruits fresh. It’s almost impossible to
remove the waxy coating. None of that from our produce, it’s super easy to wash. Most items
we will wash for you. Certain items last much longer if they are unwashed so we will bring
them to you that way. Recent reports state that up to 55% of grocery store produce labeled
organic is not organic at all, though we still pay the premium price. Fresh, local, sustainable
foods are best for: variety, investment in community, and best for your health.
How are we different from an organic co-op? Since it is local, it is picked fresh. It is all grown
right here on our farm. We do not source items that are out of season for our area. If we did,
we wouldn’t be able to verify how it was grown, or verify that it is pesticide, chemical, and
GMO-free. The fine print on some organic websites will clearly state “not necessarily organic”
or “70% organic” . You will not see grocery store PLU stickers on our produce because it’s
FRESH, LOCAL, and GROWN RIGHT HERE!
Price: Our prices will be comparable (or less expensive) to the organic produce you find in a
supermarket.
Flavor: Most of our seed are organic and/or heirloom. We choose the finest seed. One of our
favorites is a pea from our own family that has been passed down for more than five
generations called the Dora pea. We pride ourselves on quality, freshness, and flavor on each
item placed in your share each week. We want you to experience the full flavor of your
vegetables, so we harvest at optimum ripeness.
Quality: Your items will be fresh and full of flavor. No items will be cookie cutter. That is one
of the things we enjoy about harvest, is all the different shapes, sizes, and beautiful colors.
More people want high-quality, non-industrial foods, especially with the influx of GMO
(genetically modified) foods in our markets today, and the ill health effects that they are
causing. We want to share healthy and tasty foods that are meant to help us thrive and
endure, while keeping our foods genetic composition the way God intended them to remain.
We are thankful that we are not near anyone that plants GMO crops or sprays pesticides. It is
very important to our family to grow food that is pesticide- free, chemical- free, & GMO- free as
well.
Convenience: Picking up a variety of local (naturally grown) produce in one place makes it
convenient. We all lead busy lives-convenience is important to all of us. We will have 2 or 3
pickup locations available for you.
Shares will include a variety of vegetables and may occasionally contain fruit. Some items you
can expect are:
Tomatoes, Strawberries, Squash, Carrots, Peas, Potatoes, Sugar Snaps, Celery, Cabbage,
Broccoli, Cauliflower, Corn, Lima Beans, Green Beans, Cucumbers, Okra, Greens, Eggplant, Kale,
